Kids (approximately 8 to 20 years of age) are using rugby as an inhalant, primarily to help moderate their hunger and overcome their depressed stature in the society. You an see almost dozens of kids in major streets in Manila inhaling this kind of solvent and it is not easy to watch this kids ruining their lives. This is the reason why they are called “rugby boys”.
Most of the time, this kids are associated with crimes, just to have funds for their unhealthy addiction. There are approximately over six thousand children who are using solvent as their past time. And that number is only here in Manila alone.
Like any other addiction, solvents have harmful effects on health. Let me enumerate it to you one by one.
Bad Effects of Rugby Addiction
There are big consequences if an individual consistently inhaled a substance such as a solvent. Curiously, the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002 (one of Philippine laws) doesn’t include solvents as a dangerous drug. Rightly so because rugby is not a drug! So the rugby boys are immediately ignored.
So what are the health consequences of rugby addiction? Well, there are dozens of risks and these conditions are serious and may even cause death. Below are its risks based on WikiPedia report.
- nausea
- vision problems
- memory lapses
- motor lapses
- respiratory discomfort
- kidney damage
- liver damage
- brain size will be reduced
- fatal for the heart
- unintentional weight loss
- tubercolosis
- hallucination
If one refuses to discontinue this kind of addiction, he will suffer severe brain damage and will go straight into comatose and will eventually die. The toluene content of rugby gives this product that aromatic smell, which makes these kids so addictive.
If a user is moderately inhaling solvent, he can suffer from different psychological issues, which may also lead to depression.
Conclusion
Addiction is a disease that is not easy to treat. It needs the will and determination to overcome this odd habit. Plus, the family and friend support are crucial in helping an individual to cope up with rugby addiction.
Remember that solvents are not intended to be inhaled and the effects are seriously harmful to health. If you know someone who is a rugby addict, report the incident on your nearest social welfare office.
