Low vitamin D levels will promote brain disorders

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

(NaturalHealth365) Over the years, we have been instructed to ‘stay out of the sun’ and if we do venture outside to slap on the sunscreen. But, in truth, these toxic chemical lotions block out the healing benefits of sunlight and promote many brain disorders. Scientists have proven that low levels of vitamin d increase your risk for cancer, osteoporosis and learning disorders like autism.

In the past, we obtained 90% of our vitamin D from the sun. For someone with normal vitamin D levels, about 4,000 IUs can be made with arms and legs exposed in the sun for about 20 minutes. Compare that to a cup of vitamin D “fortified” milk which only has 300 IU.

How do low vitamin D levels cause learning disorders?

Vitamin D researcher Dr. John Cannell has noted a correlation between declining vitamin D levels and the rise in autism. Dr. Cannell believes vitamin D is central to brain development and enables glutathione (the master antioxidant) to naturally chelate heavy metals from our bodies.

Furthermore, there is speculation that since estrogen has many vitamin D enhancing properties – that this could be a key component as to why there is a 4:1 ratio of boys to girls who have autism.

Why do kids with autism improve in the summer?

A paper published in Medical Hypothesis, noted that parents of children with autism experienced improvements in their kids – when spending time in a swimming pool. A Japanese report found the same improvements. Researchers believe it is because these kids spent time outdoors where they could absorb vitamin D directly from the sun.

A study, published in early 2013, discovered that kids who lived in states with the highest exposure to UVB rays in the summer and fall had roughly half the number of children diagnosed with autism.

Scientific research linking vitamin D to autism

A study published in the Journal of Neuroinflammation published a study that examined 50 children with autism between the ages of 5 to 12 years old and compared them with 30 neuro-typical (NT) children. The children with autism had significantly lower serum levels of 25-hydroxy vitamin D than healthy children. 40% of autistic children had vitamin D levels less than 10 Ng/ml, while another 48% had levels between 10-30 Ng/ml.

The lower the vitamin D levels – the higher the autism rating on the Childhood Autism Rating Scale.

Could low vitamin D levels threaten our communications skills?

A study published in Pediatrics found that vitamin D insufficiency in pregnant women was significantly associated with language impairment in their children. Researchers state that vitamin D supplementation (beyond what is given in a standard prenatal vitamin) could reduce the risk of developmental language difficulties in kids.

A study published in the Journal of Nutrition found that even though 90% of pregnant women in the study were taking prenatal vitamins, 42% of white women and 54% of black women were vitamin D insufficient.

How to naturally increase your vitamin D levels

Of course, spending time in the sun is the most common way to increase vitamin D levels. Just 10-15 minutes could provide the vitamin D intake that your child needs. Vitamin D3 supplements are another simple way as well. They are inexpensive, small and can have a significant impact on your child’s levels.

As always, it’s recommended that your child’s serum levels be tested regularly to assure that they are in need of supplementation and that the amount that is being given is sufficient.
