Glucosamine Supplements May Not Help With Knee Pain and Deterioration
According to several studies, taking glucosamine supplements may not be able to decrease the pain experienced due to arthritis.
According to one study conducted by researchers at the University of Arizona which was also funded by the Beverage Institute for Health wellness, The Coca Cola, glucosamine did not have any effects on the participants.
A total of 200 people participated in the study. Some of the participants had mild to moderate knee pain which was as a result of osteoarthritis. The participants were given a glass of lemonade which also contained glucosamine to drink for 6 months and some were given plain lemonade. Both the researchers and the participants did not know which treatment the participants received. The participants were divided into two groups:
- Those who were treated with placebo
- Those who were treated with
- g of glucosamine hydrochloride.
During the six months period of study, the researchers followed up on the developments of the participants via phone calls. After the six months the participants underwent Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) so as to assess the condition of the knee cartilage.
- Bone marrow lesion.
- Knee pain
- Cartilage degradation
- CTX-11 excretion in urine
The researchers discovered there was no difference after the study. The characteristics of their condition were same in both the group that had a placebo and those that took glucosamine.
The CTX-11 is used to predict cartilage destructions. The study found that there was no decrease in cartilage in all the participants.
The MRI images urinalysis and pain assessment showed no evidence that glucosamine was more effective than placebo in improving the knee pain.
Previous studies used X-ray images which only show bones but with MRI the cartilage can be seen. Doctors measure how far apart the bones of the knee are to know how healthy the cartilage is, if the distance is large that means there is more cartilage.
