At least 35 hospitals in the United States are properly staffed and equipped, and have enough capabilities and resources and a sufficiently trained staff to function as Ebola treatment facilities, the CDC said in a statement released Tuesday. “We continue our efforts to strengthen domestic preparedness and hospital readiness. I am pleased to announce that 35 hospitals have been designated by state health officials as Ebola treatment centers that are prepared, trained, and ready to provide care for a patient with Ebola,” Health and Human Services Secretary Sylvia M. Burwell said. Over 80% of returning travelers from Ebola-hit countries live within 200 miles of one of these hospitals, which have all been assessed in situ by an expert CDC Rapid Ebola Preparedness team.

As of December 2nd, 2014 the 35 designated Ebola treatment centers are:

  • Kaiser Oakland Medical Center; Oakland, California
  • Kaiser South Sacramento Medical Center; Sacramento, California
  • University of California Davis Medical Center; Sacramento, California

  • MedStar Washington Hospital Center; Washington, D.C.
  • Children’s National Medical Center; Washington, D.C.
  • George Washington University Hospital; Washington, D.C.

This list is subject to change and will be updated weekly as more facilities are expected to be added in strategic geographical locations, according to where travelers from Ebola-affected countries are more likely to go. Moreover, areas served by the five international airports screening returning travelers for Ebola, cities with high proportion of returning travelers from West Africa, and cities with large populations of West Africans will be prioritized as well. “As long as Ebola is spreading in West Africa, we must prepare for the possibility of additional cases in the United States,” CDC director Tom Frieden said. “We are implementing and constantly strengthening multiple levels of protection, including increasing the number of hospitals that have the training and capabilities to manage the complex care of an Ebola patient. These hospitals have worked hard to rigorously assess their capabilities and train their staff.”
