The National Health and Medical Research Council in Australia says that homeopathy does not work, to the surprise of absolutely nobody. The researchers – none of whom was called Bruce – reviewed 225 studies and about 2,000 papers in order to determine whether or not homeopathy is effective. In the least shocking twist in the history of medical research, they did not find any proof that homeopathy actually works. The few papers that showed positive results were either flawed or didn’t have enough participants. But what would you expect of a system of ‘medicine’ in which sugar and water are the first line of treatment?

Homeopaths are under the impression that the placebo and the cure are the same thing. As it turns out, though, the cure is worse than the disease. The study said that “the health of people choosing Homeopathy can be vulnerable to serious risks if there are delays in treatments.” Council CEO Warwick Anderson added that people who put off proper treatment because they resort to homeopathy instead are endangering their lives. If they must try alternative medicine, they should at least have the approval and council of their primary care doctors, and take prescription medications at the same time. That’s the good thing about homeopathic potions; sugar pills and water dilutions seldom have negative interactions with real medications.

Scientists hope that this study will help patients and pharmacists think twice about providing and getting homeopathic treatment, as well as discourage insurers from paying for these treatments and students from wasting thousands of dollars in homeopathy courses. The researchers hired an independent, autonomous company to examine the same studies and research to remove bias and increase reliability. That is a very commendable initiative, though hardly a necessary one. After all, this new Australian study is just like when Homer was working on a flat tax proposal and accidentally proved there’s no god.
