Trusting Monsanto With Our Food Supply is a Recipe for Disaster

Founded in 1901, Monsanto was a major producer of plastics by the 1940s. It also manufactured products such as DDT, PCBs, Agent Orange and bovine growth hormone.

Monsanto was among the first to genetically modify a plant cell and to conduct field trials of genetically modified crops. It invested heavily in research and development, and recouped the expenses through the enforcement of biological patents on its seeds – a method that conflicts with farmers’ customary practice of saving, reusing, sharing and developing plant varieties.

Monsanto is suing farmers when their frankenseeds go airborne and take root in famers’ fields.

The genetically engineered plants have the ability to withstand heavy doses of the herbicide glyphosphate, an ingredient in Roundup.

While Monsanto insists that Roundup is as safe as aspirin, a report by Seneff and Samsel published in the journal Entropy argues that glyphosate residues, found in commonly consumed foods in the Western diet courtesy of genetically engineered sugar, corn, soy and wheat, “enhance the damaging effects of other food-borne chemical residues and toxins in the environment to disrupt normal body functions and induce disease.”

Glyphosphate is being found in the gut and in human breast milk. Harmful pathogens like Clostridium botulinum, Salmonella and E. coli can survive glyphosate in the gut, but the “good guys” in the digestive tract, protective microorganisms such as bacillus and lactobacillus, are killed off.

Even Monsanto seems to know this. About 10 years ago, it registered a patent for glyphosate’s use as an antimicrobial agent.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has revealed a proposal for mass use of Dow Chemical’s herbicide 2,4-D on the company’s genetically-engineered corn and soybeans. The GE crops were developed to withstand several herbicides, including 2,4-D.

The 2,4-D chemical, combined with glyphosate, makes up the herbicide Enlist Duo, and 2,4-D also makes up half of the toxic mix in the now infamous Agent Orange used by the United States during the Vietnam War, which is thought to have resulted in the deaths of an estimated 400,000 people and birth defects in 500,000 others.

Dow’s genetically-engineered corn and soybeans – known as Enlist – have received preliminary approval from the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Should Enlist crops win ultimate authorization, the USDA said that would increase the annual use of 2,4-D (2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid) in the United States from 26 million pounds per year to possibly 176 million pounds, according to rt.com/usa.

The false argument that is made is that yield is increased and Monsanto will be able to “feed the world.” In truth there is an overabundance of food, but economic deficiencies keep the poorest from purchasing it.

Phil Angell, Monsanto’s director of corporate communications, told the New York Times, “Monsanto should not have to vouchsafe the safety of biotech food. Our interest is in selling as much of it as possible. Assuring its safety is the FDA’s job.”

That would be fine if it weren’t for the fact that ex-Monsanto executive Michael Taylor is head of the FDA.

What scares me the most is corrupt government, heavily lobbied government – a government of, for, and by corporations.

I have started to wonder about pet food as well. We had two pets die from tumors before their 8th year; the same with my sister’s dogs. All of their feed was loaded with corn and soy. All corn and soy not labeled “non-GMO” is genetically engineered and Roundup ready.

In an experiment involving rats, where one group was fed regular pesticide-sprayed potatoes, another GMO potatoes and another organic potatoes, the group fed GMO potatoes developed tumors, and the other two did not. GMO crops are far more dangerous than we are told.

Eating food laced with Roundup could be setting us up for some major health problems, some researchers suggest. “When you disturb something in nature, there aren’t any voids,” retired pathologist and veteran glyphosate researcher Don Huber, professor emeritus at Purdue University, told Prevention Magazine. “You take the good guys out and the bad guys rule. And that’s what’s happening.”

More of the good guys need to take action, and the public needs to stop trusting that everything is just fine.
