It’s All About Animals For Naoto Matsumura Despite The Fukushima Radiation

It’s been 4 years since the Fukushima nuclear power plant meltdown in Japan, causing one of the worst radioactive disasters in history. Tomioka is a small town just 6 miles from where the melt down took place, and no one lives there except one man.

Naoto Matsumura, a 53-year-old fifth-generation rice farmer, is the only known person in this small town, but that doesn’t mean he is by himself.

He is surrounded by some of the best friends anyone could ask for, they just happen to be animals. When the nuclear disaster first happened, Matsumura fled to the south with his parents. Not long after, he returned home because he knew his animals on his farm needed to be taken care of. Naoto also helped other animals in need, and cares for cattle, pigs, cats, dogs, and even ostriches that are now ownerless as this town is deserted.

 With Fukushima radiation levels reaching over 17 times the normal amount, you would think Matsumura would fear for his life, however, he has taken the opposite approach. The Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency tested Naoto, and after meeting with them he said:

“When I went down and let them look me over, they told me I was the ‘champion’,” he said, meaning he had the highest level of radiation exposure in Japan. “But they also told me that I wouldn’t get sick for 30 or 40 years. I’ll most likely be dead by then anyway, so I couldn’t care less.”

In May, 2011, the Japanese government ordered that all livestock be put down due to lack of care and food. Matsumura would have no part of this:

“If they were going to be used for meat it wouldn’t bother me,” he said. “That’s just the way life is. But why just slaughter them all and bury them? Animals and humans are the same. I wonder if they could kill people just as indiscreetly… In my book it would be better to adopt a wait-and-see approach because it could provide good experimental data for comparison with humans.”

“All of Tomioka’s roughly 15,000 residents continue to live in shelters—except for Naoto and his animals, and they’re not going anywhere.”

Naoto is a true inspiration, despite the Fukushima radiation, he sacrifices himself as he loves his animals and as well for the potential discoveries made from living under these conditions. In my humble opinion, this man is a true hero!

We need more people in our world like Naoto Matsumura! If everyone adopted an attitude of helping and putting other people and animals first, just think of what would be happening around you in your surroundings and across the globe!
