Fermented Foods Are Fantastic For Your Health In So Many Ways

EpigeneticsAndNutriton.com is a source for optimal health and wellness! Did you know that fermented foods can help with acne, eczema and digestive issues?

Are you plagued with stomach problems? It’s not your fault! The processed food industry is robbing you of nutrition and your health. The issues around your health problems won’t disappear until you consume real, nutritious food. The processed food industry adds sugar, refined carbs, and certain food additives to everything they make which contributes to poor gut health and causes inflammation. If I only knew then what I know now!

Because of our over-sanitized modern world, most people aren’t exposed to very much  of the good bacteria, and this causes problem. You see, our food has been pasteurized, irradiated, or chemically sprayed to kill bugs, however,  this also kills the good stuff we need. The soil is depleted of nutrients and the good bacteria from the overuse of synthetic pesticides and other harmful chemicals. Certain elements in our food supply have been suspected to cause leaky gut syndrome.  This creates very small little holes in our digestive system organs that leak out the good bacteria that we need to stay healthy and keep our immune system strong.

Time To Consume More Fermented Foods

This is the number one reason why must do everything we can to restore the good bacteria in our guts. Looking back from a historical point of view, food was  very often preserved with fermentation and traditional diets had a mix of of raw and fermented foods that contained a healthy dose of good bacteria. The fermentation process creates good bacteria, better known as probiotics, that work like a small army in your gut helping to defend you against foreign invaders and prevent sickness.

Why I eat fermented foods on a consistent basis:

  • Increases the good bacteria in your gut: you can simply increase the amount of good bacteria in your gut by eating fermented foods. The bacteria created by fermented food is likely more varied and therefore, more easily assimilated in the body than what you can get from the majority of probiotic supplements.
  • Helps prevent breakouts, eczema and skin rashes: Inflammation is created by an imbalance of gut bacteria and it can show up in the form of acne, eczema or other skin ailments. When bacteria balance is achieved, skin issues tend to improve dramatically. You will find the medications you were on for your skin are now no longer needed.
  • Improves nutrition: The fermentation process raises the nutritional value of food. Many fermented foods are good sources of K2 (a vitamin that is rare in most diets) and B vitamins which would include the all important B12.
  • Better digestion: When you balance your gut bacteria and digestive enzymes you are able to naturally absorb more nutrients and improve your intestinal tract health which helps with virtually all diet related stomach issues. Taking a quality probiotic daily and consuming fermented foods will help you avoid that bloated gut feeling.
  • Fortify your immune system: Eighty percent of your immune system resides in your gut, so it’s important to keep it healthy. Ever since I made fermented foods a part of my lifestyle, things like colds are few and far between.
  • Will help keep you lean: Good gut bacteria’s role in reducing obesity is still being researched, but some research indicates that bad gut bacteria promotes obesity, while good bacteria fights against it.

My favorite fermented foods:

Fermented foods are easy to make a part of your lifestyle if your goal is to improve your health and they are inexpensive when made at home. It can be as simple as making homemade sauerkraut with just cabbage, water and salt. You can also try:

  • Miso paste: A fermented combination of soybeans, sea salt, and rice koji. Since the soy is fermented, there are less phytoestrogens and phytates, just make sure you choose organic to avoid GMOs! My favorite brand is Miso Master.
  • Tempeh: Made from fermented soybeans, which looks similar to a veggie burger. It’s delicious when you marinate it and can be used as a meat alternative.
  • Kombucha: Yum! A naturally carbonated drink and if you crave soda, Kombucha can really help you to get over it. It’s very thirst quenching.
  • Fermented pickles & veggies: The majority of pickles in grocery stores aren’t fermented, however, there is a brand called, Real Pickles (currently only in stores in the northeast) which is raw and fermented and you can order online.
  • Kimchi, another fermented food, is a traditional Korean side dish made of vegetables with a combination of seasonings. Use as a topping on quinoa, wild rice, or on a sandwich, it tastes amazing.

Cheers!
