This Is Why You Absolutely Need To Stop Wearing Shoes In Your House

By David Benjamin

Have you ever been to someone’s home and they have all the shoes by the front door outside of the house? I have had several friends mostly from eastern and/or Asian families who do this. I always found it interesting personally considering growing up not many of my friends and family kept all the shoes outside. Most people I know take their shoes off at the door but some people choose to wear shoes in their home. Why would you wear shoes in your home? it’s beyond me! it’s more comfortable to be barefoot and it’s better to develop foot and angle strength also.

Some new information I discovered today is worth sharing though. The University of Houston did a study and found that 39% of shoes contained bacteria C. diff (otherwise known as Clostridium difficile), this is a public health threat that is now also resistant to a number of antibiotics. C. diff infections can cause multiple health conditions such as bad diarrhea which can also progress to colon inflammation and further serious health problems, especially if it doesn’t respond to antibiotic treatment effectively.

In another study done by the University of Arizona 9 different forms of bacteria were found on the bottom of shoes. Good Morning America did a test and found that the bottom of shoes were dirtier than toilet seats also. Furthermore, Dr. Charles Gerba, a microbiologist and professor at the University of Arizona did a test with a brand new pair of shoes and found that within just two weeks of wearing a new shoe 440,000 units of bacteria were found on the shoe. An astonishing 27% of that total bacteria were deadly E Coli. Klebsiella pneumonia was also found, which can lead to and cause pneumonia and wound and bloodstream infections and another type of infection called Serratia ficaria, which can lead to infection of the respiratory tract.

“Shoes are contaminated from diverse sources, and we are regularly contaminating our doorsteps by shoes,” says study author M. Jahangir Alam, Ph.D.

The Clostridium difficile is only the tip of the iceberg though because only 4 out of 10 people have this on their shoes. There are many different types of bacteria that get into your home from your shoe. For example, most most public restroom floors contain around 2 million bacteria per square inch (interestingly enough the average toilet seat only contains about 50 per square inch). These are two very good reasons to avoid wearing shoes in your home at all. If you have young kid’s who crawl around on the floor all day (whether 2 years old or 4 years old) it’s even more important to not wear your shoes inside your home. Children 2 and under should NOT be playing on floors that shoes have been walked on. It is best to leave your shoes outside the home if you have a one or two year old child.

What’s interesting is that many countries like I previously mentioned earlier in this article leave their shoes completely outside their home with that door closed so you cannot even see shoes in the home. A great idea is to leave them at the front door or in the garage by the door to avoid bringing any unwanted bacteria or germs in the home. What’s worse is that many of us will be barefoot in our homes (especially during the summer time) and to wear your shoes in your home even just once or a few times if you forgot something and are in a rush can potentially bring this dangerous bacteria in your home. Avoid it and do your best to keep the shoes outside for your health and safety.

Not only do shoes contain bacteria but they also contain germs, chemicals and oil or petroleum by-products. The bottom of your shoes are full of plenty of chemicals and pathogens that you do not want to spread all over your home then walk barefoot on later.

It’s uncommon in western countries such as America and Canada for guests to ask to remove your shoes at the door but most cultures around the world ask that you leave your shoes at the door. It will help keep those germs and bacteria out, as well as bacteria C. diff which can be more dangerous. Taking your shoes off at the door is a sign of respect for your home and the home of guests. In many religious traditions shoes are removed for prayer and entering the home. Shoes carry many germs and bacteria and it’s best to leave the outside world just outside your door along with your shoes.

Let’s recap, what’s on the bottom of your shoes? Fecal matter, multiple forms of bacteria causing fecal matter as well as infections and inflammation of the colon, germs, chemicals, petroleum and so much more! Where are you going to leave your shoes from now on? and maybe you’ll rethink that 5-second rule (or 5 BECOMING a 10-second rule) of dropping food on the floor and picking it up to eat it next time.

Whether you remove your shoes or not, your home is not a sterile environment. Bacteria are ubiquitous. If we didn’t have our immune systems, we’d all be dead.

      • Journas

That’s true but it doesn’t mean a person can’t take steps to minimize it. I still take a dump in the toilet instead of on the living room floor even though my home is not a sterile environment.

        • You People Are Nuts

now if you would only teach your kids to do that.

          • youpeopleareinsane

I’m teaching my kids to do it in the neighbors yard.
I save money on the water bill that way.
            Plus it makes me laugh..
            I like to laugh.

              Yes……but their grass is greener.

      • Bob

Yup! What you say is the truth….

But What About ” DEADLY STINK- FOOT in your homes once shoes are off….
Or my all time favorite :- TOE-JAM !

    • FarmerX

I walk indoors and outdoors without shoes year round in all weather including in the horse pen and gardening. I must be DOOMED!

      • DK

Do dogs and cats was their feet when coming in ?

    • Pink Slime

What about people with dirt floors? Which means your ENTIRE ancestor line? Thank goodness for their dirt floors or we wouldn’t be here!

    • Eggzactly

I bet you breathe in more bacteria in inside your home than the bottom of your shoes have on them.

My wife keeps children at our home . She has the children take off their shoes to keep the older ones from stepping on the little ones fingers . But that began to present a problem . Some of the children have athletes feet . They stink so bad . Our rug began to stink and then when we were not looking they would put their feet on the couch while TV time was in . To walk n the door it smelled like tail ( diapers ) and wet stinking feet . This was a sign that the bacteria even on their socks was now getting into our living space . So these children we insisted that they keep their shoes on . So now how do you fight a battle like that . One thing I saw in the past while visiting a farm was a dipping pan for your shoes to protect the animals that was keep snide . This might be an idea . A little disinfectant and some water in a pie pan . Then a rug to wipe of the residue . Ok ! Problem solved .

Pee on your feet to kill the fungus, go barefoot more and wear sandals and expose your feet to the sunlight and the air and the land. Stinky is anaerobic, almost always.
Shocking, I know, but urine has an amazing story we have lost awareness of.

In the good old days before we became A FAILED BLACK SOCIALIST STATE…
Our Municipal public swiming pools had a shallow step in bath filled with disinfectant one had to walk
through to get in an out of the change rooms…

Sadly our New World Order SA ANC Regime metro’s have laid waist to all our public swiming pools
which now lye defunked with trapped rotten rainwater….
As we make ready for the soon coming Total Electrical Blackout of South Africa…
Since donor NWO/ G8 funding has run out….

    • JettaBlack

I was taught that learning to ‘always’ remove my shoes would one-day protect me from getting my ass kicked because I soiled the carpet; nothing about carrying in bacteria.

    • desertspeaks

uh huh, people carry germs and bacteria too, STAY OUT OF YOUR OWN HOMES! YOU’RE A DANGER TO YOURSELF!!!
BE AFRAID OF EVERYTHING AT ALL TIMES!!!

      • CrowPie

Ain’t that the truth….I mean…..it couldn’t be that we just might NEED those bacteria in our environments on a regular basis in order to remain resistant to them…….could it?

Now, as far as stinky feet, pissy babies and dogs and cats…….Hot vinegar in a personal carpet cleaner will all but solve every issue from bacterial, fungal, and even the un slightly stain.

        Go figure.

I’mma year round barefoot girl, too.

sit on a bus or train or in resturaunt where people put thier feet, go home sit on a chair then sit on chair undressed…..

    • Man

so shoes have a bacteria that effects the colon……

Get your shoe out of my BUTTT

Also, a toilet is one of the cleanliest part of the house, it gets cleaned more than any other part of the house… so to compare that with shoes is just dumb

    • katkaprvosienka

Even in eastern Europe is common to take off the shoes and take on the slippers.

    • freedom007

This fear of bacteria is wrong.
In fact we need contact to bacteria, even patjhogenic ones, our immune systems are made for it, and those who keep themselves all-too-clean with disinfectants and other chemicals are found to be less healthy and less infection-resistant than those who have no fear of dirt and keep themselves rather clean but not “sterile”!
Small kids even like to be dirty – why? It is not a mistake of Nature but has a good reason in a biological need of the kid´s immune system to get to know all common microbial enemies that grow in the kid´s daily surroundings.

But there is a REAL reason for going barefoot in house: to keep one´s feet healthy.

Modern Western man´s feet, caged in shoes constantly except during sleep, restricted both in movement and sensation, uniformly develop weakness of muscles and often even develop deformities, flat-foot for example.

Remember furthermore that the foot is anatomically and neurologically similar to the hand – small children like to exercise in grasping things with their bare feet – and that it has those well-known reflex zones which have a strong influence on our general wellbeing.

This is why we should go barefoot as often as possible, at least within our houses.

Not to mention all the germs and contaminants that can be found on the cloths of beautiful women!! Strangely men, and homely fat girls, never have this problem. That is why I recommend having all the hot girls leave their clothes at the door. Right next to their shoes….

I don’t use my microwave oven for cooking food, I use it for cooking shoes. That is why it is sitting next to my front porch.

    • y2k

I wear my shoes inside because i have a medical condition that i cant spell for the life of me. very painful, and crazy expensive insoles i need to wear. I have to stand on a towel in the shower.

    • Betty Liberty

Germaphobes get sick more than people who go with the flow.

    • JMC

This is all very well and good, but when a member of your household has a severe case of athlete’s foot, you have no choice. The only way to keep from catching it yourself is to wear shoes at all times. We even use shower shoes, and I’m NOT talking about flip-flops, but the old-fashioned kind that look like ballet flats. Believe me, it wasn’t easy finding them!

    • The Real Deal

I’ve been wearing shoes in my house for over thirty plus years… I’m fine so far. wWait, wait…I feel a rumbling in my stomach. I think it’s a fart, nothing to worry about. Oops, that wasn’t a fart… BRB!

    • lindarosemary

This is a little off beat.
But we had our house tested for mold . I won’t go into why. the tests showed no mold problems. The amount was minute, and normal. A test of outside in the open air showed quite a bit. I’m not saying stay in doors. But what I am saying is that there are many things that exist in nature, which are not necessarily harmful, and I am an advocate of going barefoot when possible for a bit each day to get in contact with the earth. We need that contact.
