Best Acne Supplements - Do They Really Work?

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Does beauty extend beyond the skin? A University research team was investigating the growing trend of taking vitamins and supplements with the aim of fighting aging, wrinkles, sun damage, and breakouts. Everyone out there wants to know if these supplements will provide them with the beauty boost that skin-care products alone can’t. Is there some truth to the idea that you can fight acne problems this way, or is this another fad by supplements producers? Time to separate fact from fiction!

We’ve previously written a lot about acne and how to treat it and manage it. This is perhaps one of the most-asked-about topics in this site. We know that breakouts are a common thing for many of our readers, and that they have a big impact on their self-esteem and one’s sense of beauty. We believe that nobody wants to deal with the scarring, unsightly bumps, red marks, and pain (both emotional and physical) that come with acne (especially adult acne).

If you find that no matter what over-the-counter or prescription topical products you try, nothing works; you are not alone in this. The promises of getting rid of your acne quickly and effectively by using a daily supplement are very tempting. Here’s a breakdown of three supplements that are largely used as internal acne fighters, and research-based information about whether or not they can really do what’s claimed:

Zinc: This is a mineral supplement often referred as an “essential trace element.” This is to mean that only small amounts of this supplement are needed human health. There are scientific studies hinting that taking zinc supplements combined with using topical antibiotics may be beneficial to winning your fight against acne. Other studies suggest that taking zinc orally, without combining it with the topical antibiotics, may help with acne, but majority of these studies involved a much higher dose than is normally recommended and thus there is possibility of it being toxic. There are documented reports of people becoming ill for taking excess zinc (zinc poisoning) in the hopes of curing their acne overnight. If you’re considering using zinc supplements to fight acne, make sure you buy the right product with the correct amount of zinc being used. Actually, we will later recommend a product at the end of this article.

Vitamin B3: different forms of vitamin B3 include niacin and niacinamide. It’s readily available in a wide variety of foods that we eat on a daily basis including eggs, green vegetables, meat, fish, milk, and cereal grains. Using topical niacinamide makes it a potent cell-communicating ingredient that will give you a variety of anti-aging benefits. Scientists believe that there’s also growing evidence suggesting that Vitamin B3 can mitigate acne and the red marks associated with it. According to the National Institutes of Health, the evidence is still lacking to recommend taking vitamin B3 supplements orally with the hope of treating acne. Vitamin B3 is believed to work best when applied topically rather than when it is taken orally as a supplement. Another reason of using it topically is because vitamin B3 is water-soluble, and thus it can be quickly excreted when your body doesn’t need it anymore. Nevertheless, very few people are ever deficient in vitamin B3 because it’s so prevalent in the foods many of us routinely eat.

Collagen: this is a natural protein component of the human skin that acts like a protective scaffold and a building block for skin cells, tissues and organs. If you doubt its importance… nearly 35% of your body’s protein content is made up of collagen. It is present in your bones, muscles, and tissues of most organs. Collagen, keratin and elastin give the skin its strength, elasticity and structure. Your body will naturally produce collagen as the need arises, but this production may gradually be disrupted as part of the natural process of aging. Natural collagen promises to

•    reducing wrinkles
•    reversing age of skin
•    tighter skin
•    plumps up skin
•    improves skin elasticity
