Carbohydrates have become a heated topic of discussion among the people who prefer a healthy lifestyle. However, despite the hype created by this topic, the main functions of carbohydrates for health remain a mystery. Fortunately, unlike the biggest wonders of the world, the answer to this great nutritional puzzle is not too far. Good carbs, bad carbs, complex or simple – what are the differences between them?

What are Carbohydrates

Although there are many wonders of the world that continue to amaze and intrigue us, there is a bigger puzzle that mankind is trying to solve: Carbohydrates.

American nutritionist Susan Burke accepted this challenge and her mission is to unveil the mysteries of carbohydrates and to separate facts from fiction.

Carbohydrate intake, especially before and after intense exercise or effort, can provide body energy, can prevent hunger and delay fatigue.

According to Susan Burke’s belief, when we eat refined carbohydrates, they are digested quickly and are absorbed faster into the bloodstream as glucose.

Glucose is the pure form of energy that is used by the muscles and cells. The question is whether you have too much stored in fat cells. The best way to prevent this is to avoid consuming refined carbohydrates.

Fruits, for example, are carbohydrates. Good carbohydrates from fruits are the ones contained in the fruit peel and pulp of the fruit. Fruit juice contains sugar called fructose. It takes only five seconds to drink a glass of juice. That means you are ingesting 150 calories in just 5 seconds.

To get the same number of calories you should peel two oranges and eat them full. That would take a few minutes and it would make you feel fuller by eating fewer calories and eating healthy, “said Susan Burke.

In fact, carbohydrates are not nearly as confusing as the rumor that started all of this. The key is to choose wisely and to accept nothing but the best.

That means you shouldn’t be eating foods that are less nutritious, but contain a lot of calories. White bread, rice, pasta, juices and fizzy drinks will deny you of the nutrients your body needs. Do not accept to replace them with “impostors”.

Choose natural wealth and nutritional power of whole grains. They will bring energy and keeps your silhouette.

To put you in motion and guide you in the right direction, Susan Burke recommends a list of the healthiest existing carbohydrates and a list of the less healthy ones, the bad carbohydrates.
