How a Diet including High Fructose can Slow Traumatic Brain Injury Recovery

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

New studies come out all the time. People say an organic diet can help with cancer, some people are obsessed with juicing and others say the paleo diet, or caveman diet, is the best way to stay healthy since it is what the cavemen ate.

According to UCLA studies the best diet plan if you have been involved in head trauma is a diet that stays away from processed high fructose. This is to assist in improving memory, or at least not delay the improvement of the patients recovering memory. Here is why they recommend staying away from high fructose in your diet.

The Research
As usual the research team decided to test their hypothesis on rats’ rather than humans. What the scientists decided to do was feed the rats their normal diet for less than a week and teach them how to escape their maze while doing so. After this they divided them into different groups. One group had tap water while the other group was water with high fructose in it. The scientists used crystallized corn fructose in an amount that would be equivalent to what a person drinks in soda’s that have high fructose corn syrup.

After a week on the diet, all of the rats’ were put under a local anesthetic and received blunt trauma to the head similar to that of human brain injury. After the next six weeks the scientists then retested the rats’ to see if they remembered their way in the maze.

What was the result from the test? It was that of the rats’ that were given high fructose corn syrup in their water were 30% took longer to exit than those who just had plain, ordinary tap water. If you are a rat, this is not the best diet for improving memory. According to Newsroom UCLA, the university team discovered that fructose changeda large amount of biological processes in the rats’ brains after the injury. The sweetener hindered with the capacity of neurons to interconnect with each other, revamp connections postwound, record recollections and harvest enough energy to fuel basic purposes. They linked it to the fact that fructose disrupts the flow between brain cells when learning something new.

What to Do
The best diet plan for those with traumatic head injury is to stay away from high fructose, or in the least reduce it from your diet to protect your brain. The sweeteners you should be staying away from are honey, cane sugar, high fructose corn syrup and liquid sweetener made from corn-starch. Look for these ingredients in everything from your condiments to baby food to soft drinks.

When improving your memory your best diet plan should be looking for all natural sugars. Look for:

  • Stevia – it is a plant leaf that has zero calories and is even proven to lower your blood pressure. It also has been known to lower blood sugar in diabetics.
  • Erythritol – a sugar alcohol that is found naturally in some fruits. Since it is a natural sugar it will not spike your blood sugar or insulin. Like other sugar alcohols, it can cause stomach issues and discomfort.
  • Xylitol – another sugar alcohol. Dentists believe it is good for your teeth and reduces cavities and decay that means fewer fillings for you and your children! Keep it at a small dose as it can cause stomach problems and is also harmful to animals.
  • Yacon Syrup – some use it for weight loss since research showed it can help obese people lose weight. It is high in fructooligosaccharides which feeds the good bacteria in your intestines.

The Conclusion
When it comes to improving memory, whether a person involved in head trauma or they are a young child or baby, it is best to have the best diet plan for you. This includes staying away from processed high fructose corn syrup.

If a rat as the test subject does not react well to a small amount of high fructose corn syrup, imagine what it will do to a humans’ brain. The best diet plan for the rats’ was to eat their food and plain, tap water. The best for humans’ is to eat for that is more natural and not as processed. It is difficult to eat all natural and all organic all the time. It is best to limit your intake for improving your memory.
