Blogging on Steroids
n/a
Looking back through 11 years of posts on this blog(most dealing with asthma), Ive noticed I do my best writing about the subject when Im on high-dose steroids. And it’s not just quality of the posts, it also quantity and frequency. I simply post more often when Im on the roids. In fact, I rarely write anything anymore unless im on them. I think part of the reason for that, is because when Im not the higher doses of the drug, it usually mean I’m not super sick ie. actively flaring. When I’m not sick the last thing I want to do is write about being sick.
Like most chronic lungers, oral steroids tend to wire me and make me very antsy. That hyperactivity speeds up my thought process as well. When I’m high on prednisone, I finder it easier to write…the words just flow out of my head. I wouldn’t say I become more creative, but I definitely become more passionate and more in tune with what I’m writing about. I actually find this rather odd though, because like most asthmatics, when I’m on high dose steroids I suffer from severe sleep deprivation. During those times it’s amazing I can think at all, let alone put a coherent blog post together.
Because Ive been writing about a single topic for so long, I often find myself rehashing or re-wording something Ive already written about. Ah, but when Im on steroids, the inspiration for completely new ideas and stories is endless and seems to come from everywhere. The themes can be ridiculously simple or super technical, but I know that whatever I write while under the influence, will resonate with at least some of the asthmatics who read my stuff. Here are just a few examples of posts that were entirely conceived and written while I was on high dose prednisone. The latter two might seem silly and not worth writing about, but if you’re a bad asthmatic and frequently flyer like I am, you will totally get it.
The Recovery phases of a severe asthma exacerbation
So yes, steroids are awful in more ways than not. They carry tons of negative side effects that can make life miserable, but they can also bring on brief bouts of welcome mental clarity, that some, like myself, find very useful. Hey, since there’s really no way to avoid taking the drug if you have asthma, you might as well embrace what is probably the only positive side effect, right?
Btw, I was NOT on high dose steroids when I wrote this post.
