Why Your Efforts at Bulking May Be Foiled by Thyroid Disorders

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

The thyroid hormone is responsible for your brain to be able to keep thinking clearly as well as keep your heart pumping properly; further, it ensures that all your organs are working harmoniously. If your thyroid gland produces less or more hormones, it can create a lot of problems and threaten your wellbeing, including any specific fitness goals that you may have been targeting with training.

Symptoms of an Underactive and Overactive Thyroid Gland

If you have hypothyroidism, you may experience some symptoms like fatigue, weight gain, reduced tolerance to cold, problems of memory, brittle or dry hair, elevated cholesterol levels, and feelings of depression or irritation, a slower rate of heartbeat, and sluggish bowel movements or constipation.

On the flip side, if you have hyperthyroidism, it can lead to weight losseven if youbuy prohormone and exercise to build bulk. You could also face intolerance to heat, have more frequent movement of the bowels, enlargement of the thyroid gland, irritability, and feeling of nervousness, fatigue, and a disturbed sleep.

Diagnosing Thyroid Problems Can Be Difficult

Even though the level of the thyroid hormone can be very easily established with a very simple blood test, most often doctors leave this test till they have run out of other options since most of the symptoms are extremely common and can be the result of many other medical conditions. Even when the blood test for thyroid hormone is carried out, the results are open to interpretation, and the lack of agreement often results in many people not receiving proper treatment. Till a few years back, a normal TSH level was as broad as 0.3 to 5.0, however, the National American Association of Clinical Endocrinologists suggests that this is narrowed down to 0.3 to 3 though there is a hot debate in the medical fraternity regarding its wisdom.

Best Diagnosis Is Based on Blood Test as Well As Personal Symptoms

Even as doctors debate the range of normal TSH hormone reported in laboratory blood tests, some doctors suggest that the diagnosis regarding hypothyroidism or hyperthyroidism should take into account not only the blood test results but also the symptoms that the patient is displaying. Typically, a person would be at more risk of thyroid disease if he was suffering from an autoimmune disorder like diabetes, has received radiation treatment multiple times in the thyroid area, there is a family history of thyroid disease, or if there’s any reason for hormonal changes such as pregnancy, etc. Women, especially older women, are especially susceptible to thyroid problems. Doctors may examine the patient clinically by palpating the thyroid gland or examining the eyelids or even order an ultrasound examination of the thyroid.

Conclusion

If you think that you are displaying some symptoms of a thyroid gland problem, you should ask your doctor about your concern and also get a simple blood test done to evaluate the TSH level. If the results are not conclusive and you are not satisfied with the outcome, you should seek the expert advice of an endocrinologist.
