Akron Ohio Hospice Educates On How To Identify Early Signs Of Dementia

AKRON, Ohio (beforeitsnews) April 16, 2019 – Harbor Light Hospice, an Akron Ohio hospice, released a blog educating readers on how to identify early signs of dementia. Understanding these early signs can help you get the proper care for your loved one sooner, improving their quality of life.

Dementia refers to a decline in mental ability that is severe enough to interfere with a person’s daily life. Alzheimer’s is the most common form of dementia, accounting for between 60 percent and 80 percent of cases. Vascular dementia, which occurs after a stroke, is also common. Dementia is caused by damage that makes it difficult for brain cells to communicate with each other normally, and different types of dementia are related to different types of damage. Most of these changes are permanent and worsen over time.

Memory loss is the most common dementia symptom. Even slight, short-term memory lapses can be an indicator that your loved one is experiencing dementia. Other symptoms include increasing apathy, confusion, and disorientation. Frequent mood swings and an inability to adapt to changes are also typical. Because dementia interferes with daily tasks, your loved one may be unable to find the correct words to use, follow stories, or remember whether they’ve done something already, resulting in repetition. If your loved one is suffering from any of these symptoms and has a difficult time completing daily activities, they may be showing signs of dementia. Medication may be helpful in treating some forms of dementia, while non-drug therapies can also be an option in some cases.

If you feel that your loved one may be showing signs of dementia, speak to Harbor Light Hospice. The care center can help you determine whether you should begin considering dementia hospice care and help you develop a care plan for your loved one and your family. Harbor Light employs a range of medical professionals, from nurses and doctors to therapists and counselors, to help your family handle this major transition in your loved one’s life.
