Can’t sleep? Here are some possible reasons why

While popular health experts and research indicate that we have to sleep at least 7 hours a day, most people have a very hard time enjoying a good night’s sleep. Human beings spend 1/3 of their lifetime sleeping. Some truly sleep when and how they are supposed to; while some have a terribly hard time falling doing this.

This difficulty in sleeping could as a result of many factors; voluntary or involuntary. You only need to identify what it could be in your case and find ways to rectify or curb it read on.

  1. You could be having a sleep disorder

While you may brush this off as a zero probability, sleep disorders are real. Having a sleep disorder can make you stay awake all night or prevent you from having a proper sleep.  Sleep disorders vary from common to uncommon; they range from self-correcting issues, physical disorders to neurological issues.

  • Apnea is a sleep disorder that mainly relates from having respiratory difficulties. If you have sleep Apnea, you will possibly realize that you have difficulty breathing when sleeping. Sometimes you will wake up gasping for breath or chocking.
  • If you always feel a sudden urge to move your legs or sudden jerking of your arms or legs when sleeping, you may be suffering from restless leg disorder or periodic limb movement disorder
  • Sleep paralysis is also another disorder that can prevent you from having a restful sleep. Sleep paralysis is characterized by a temporary physical body paralysis just before falling asleep or before waking up.
  • Other sleep disorders that affect people when sleeping include delayed sleep syndrome, rapid eye movement disorder, night terrors, situational circadian rhythm disorder and parasomnia.

You cloud be making specific wrong choices everyday

The “can’t sleep” problem could as a result of specific wrong choices you make on a daily basis; like taking caffeine before going to sleep or alcohol. You may consider reducing your caffeine and alcohol intake to see if anything improves.

  1. Environmental distractions

Perhaps your sleeping environment is not conducive. There could be too much noise in the background or too much light. In this case you may want to substitute your curtain with black ones to regulate the incoming light. You may also want to remove anything causing noise like radio, television or putting your cell phone in silent mode.

Also, moving homes can affect your sleep patterns. The only remedy to this is to try and adjust to the change or try to make the new home as comfortable as the previous one.
