New FDA Implant to Treat Severe Sleep Apnea or Day Time Sleepiness

Daytime sleepiness is a very common problem in many people. This condition is also called as Sleep apnea. When people suffer from Sleep apnea, their brain does not properly send breathing signals while resting. This condition is horrible enough by itself. Isn’t it?

Many people think that due to an incomplete sleep at night they feel sleepy during the day. But sometimes this may not be the only reason. Instead, go for a checkup to the doctor to check if you are having severe sleep apnea or not.

The solutions to the sleep apnea can be really scary. You may have to take regular medication and rely on ungainly breathing machines during the day. You may have to opt for invasive surgery. Though, you may have a gentler treatment going forward for this.

The US Food & Drug Administration has approved an implantable device named as Respicardia’s Remede System. This system can fight more serious cases of sleep apnea easily. How?

The hardware of the system amounts to a battery pack, which will be slipped under your skin in the upper chest. The wires will enter the blood vessels near the nerve that stimulates your breathing process. If you stop breathing normally in mid-sleep, it will stimulate that nerve to move your diaphragm and thus let you keep breathing.

You may think of it as an on-demand jumpstart for your breathing. This isn’t a surefire fix as only half of study subjects saw the hoped-for dramatic reduction in human’s breathing problems. Also, it can’t be used for obstructive sleep apnea where the person’s upper airway is blocked. But an implant is better than wearing some bulky equipment to bed. This machine could mark an end to medication and invasive machines and give relief to the sufferers from sleep apnea.
