Understanding Systemic Racism in Healthcare

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

The healthcare industry, an essential pillar for societal wellbeing, unfortunately, harbors a distressing history of mistreating and overlooking marginalized communities. This reality stands as a stark contradiction to the fundamental principles of medicine and healthcare, which are rooted in compassion, care, and unbiased treatment for all individuals. Yet, reports and studies consistently reveal that patients of color often feel the need for an advocate present, either physically in the room or on the phone, when dealing with healthcare professionals. This necessity underscores a deep-seated issue within the healthcare system, highlighting the pervasive influence of systemic racism on patient care and trust.

The Manifestations of Healthcare Bias

Systemic racism in healthcare manifests in various harmful ways, each contributing to a wider gap in health equity and access. Notably, patients of color have historically and, troublingly, continue to experience significant disparities in several key areas of medical treatment.

There exists a dangerous and unfounded myth within parts of the medical community that individuals of certain races experience pain differently or have higher pain thresholds. This misconception leads to serious issues in pain management, with patients of color often receiving inadequate pain relief or having their pain complaints taken less seriously than their white counterparts.

Discriminatory practices extend into diagnostic procedures as well. Research has indicated that patients of color might be exposed to higher levels of radiation during X-ray imaging, a discrepancy that can increase the risk of radiation-related health issues. This differential treatment raises questions about the underlying biases in medical protocols and the potential long-term impact on the health of marginalized communities.

The likelihood of misdiagnosis is significantly higher among patients of color, a critical concern that can lead to delayed treatment, unnecessary suffering, and even preventable deaths. Factors contributing to this issue include communication barriers, stereotyping, and a lack of cultural competence among healthcare providers. Misdiagnosis not only erodes the trust between patients and healthcare systems but also highlights the need for a more inclusive and understanding approach to medical training and practice.

A report released by the American Public Health Association in 2020 highlighted stark racial disparities in healthcare outcomes, noting that Black, Hispanic, and Indigenous patients received significantly lower quality of care compared to their White counterparts across a range of conditions, including cardiovascular diseases, maternal healthcare, and cancer treatment. Furthermore, the COVID-19 pandemic laid bare the racial inequities within the healthcare system, with Black and Hispanic populations experiencing higher rates of infections, hospitalizations, and deaths. These disparities are not merely statistical anomalies but are indicative of the systemic barriers and biases that patients of color face in accessing equitable healthcare. The 2020 data serve as a critical call to action for healthcare professionals, policymakers, and society at large to address the root causes of these disparities and work towards a future where healthcare equity is a reality for all.

A Systemic Issue Calling for Systemic Solutions

The recurring instances of mistreatment and inequities experienced by patients of color in the healthcare system undeniably point to a systemic issue. Systemic racism in healthcare is not merely about individual biases or isolated incidents; it is about the structures, policies, and practices that perpetuate inequality and hinder access to quality care for all. Addressing this deep-rooted problem requires a comprehensive strategy that encompasses education, policy reform, and community engagement. Healthcare professionals need training in cultural competency and implicit bias, policies must prioritize health equity, and the healthcare system at large should strive to engage with and learn from the communities it serves.

“Historically, marginalized communities have been swept under the rug by the healthcare industry. Today, that still occurs and physicians need to be given the time and resources to advocate for their patients so they are heard and properly treated. With physicians and other healthcare workers being overworked, more concerted efforts need to be made by hospitals and organizations to ensure that everyone gets the care they need. ” shares Sarah Worthy, CEO of DoorSpace.

The journey toward dismantling systemic racism in healthcare is complex and challenging. However, acknowledging the problem and committing to sustained action and change can pave the way for a more equitable and just healthcare system. As society continues to grapple with the ramifications of systemic racism, the healthcare industry must take a leading role in fostering a culture of inclusivity, respect, and equity. Only then can we hope to heal the wounds of the past and build a healthier future for all.
