U.S. House Judiciary Committee Passes 'Clean' National E-Verify Bill

In the nation’s capital yesterday, Congressional members fought tooth and nail over the open borders and amnesty advocates to bring jobs back to America.  E-Verify took a giant leap forward in the face of withering opposition.  The U.S. Chamber of Commerce fought like a wildcat to stop E-Verify. Why?  It represents every illegal alien employer that demands cheap slave labor rather than employing Americans at a living wage.

WE SUFFERED NO LOSSES ON ALL THE AMENDMENT VOTES

My long time friend, Roy Beck, director of www.NumbersUSA.org , said, “We’ve hit you with a lot of emailed alerts this week because it is the biggest week in 6 years for moving legislation to really tackle illegal immigration. I thought you would want to know about the great victory this afternoon.”

Key points to know:

H.R. 2885 passed 22-13 in a form that we believe we can move through the House and Senate and into law — even by the end of this year. We didn’t lose on any of the dozens of amendments that were filed.

“The key victory was defeat of an amendment to strip the state preemption language from the bill,” said Beck.  “It is a bit complicated to explain why that was such an important victory, so please read the explanation that I sent out earlier today that is below this message.

“The one amendment that Chairman Lamar Smith lost was one to strip an exemption that allowed farmers to skip E-Verify for re-employing field workers they claimed they had employed in earlier years.

“This exemption was something of a loophole meant to entice the big farm lobbies to support the bill. Instead, those lobbies have been running a high-priced national campaign to defeat mandatory E-Verify. Outlaw farmers who insist on hiring illegal labor deserved to have this loophole closed.

“All the Democrat votes were for the amendment, as were Republicans Poe and Gohmert of Texas, Sensenbrenner of Wisconsin, Gallegly of California and King of Iowa. Good for all of them. The Democrats were even quoting Republican Secretary of State of Kansas Kris Kobach that the exemption amounted to an amnesty for a lot of field workers. It was great to see all the Democrats opposing this “amnesty.”

“Although many conservative groups have been battling hard for passage of just that amendment out of the belief that they were working for TOUGHER enforcement, it was the PRO-amnesty Members of the committee who voted for it in order to WEAKEN enforcement. Every one of them!

“NumbersUSA has been warning our Members for weeks that passage of this amendment would probably kill mandatory E-Verify legislation for at least the next couple of years.

“Proof that we knew what we were talking about came in the fact that the pro-amnesty Members of the committee led the way. And they knew what they were doing. As did their open-borders allies among the advocacy groups.

“Pro-amnesty advocacy groups were tweeting and blogging at the time that the amendment to eliminate the state preemption language was a “poison pill” that, if passed, would keep H.R. 2885 from ever moving any farther in this Congress.

“The reason this vote was so dangerous was because so many ANTI-amnesty conservative groups were lobbying anti-amnesty Republican Members so hard.

“Thank goodness for NumbersUSA’s sophisticated grassroots who also poured on their own pressure to beware the poison pill that might look like the apple of their eye.

“Of the anti-amnesty Members of the committee, the only ones who voted for the poison pill were Rep. King (R-Iowa) and Rep. Trent Franks (R-Ariz.). I’m sure that they did so for pro-enforcement reasons. And I also have to believe that they had consulted with their anti-amnesty colleagues beforehand to be sure that the poison pill wasn’t going to pass.”
