Illegal Alien Amnesty Officially Starts this Week

Congress Surrenders Enforcement Authority to Obama

This week, up to 1.9 million illegal alien children, brought to the USA illegally over U.S. borders by their parents—gained a reprieve from deportation by an executive order by President Barack Obama.

One congressman said, “This does not solve the illegal immigration crisis. It give more incentives to more illegal aliens to bring their children over our borders in violation of our laws.  Obama has usurped the authority of Congress without solving the problem.”

Dan Stein, president of the Federation for America Immigration Reform, www.FairUS.org, spoke to me about what Obama’s fiat means.

“On Wednesday, August 15, President Obama’s push to enact illegal alien amnesty becomes a reality when the United States Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) officially begins to accept applications from almost 2 million illegal aliens seeking amnesty,” said Stein.  “On June 15, 2012, the Obama administration usurped Congressional authority by unilaterally amending federal immigration policy to grant backdoor amnesty to illegal aliens meeting criteria similar to that of the failed DREAM Act. This broad usurpation of Congressional power came not in the form of an executive order or regulation, but by a mere policy memorandum authored by the Secretary of Homeland Security, Janet Napolitano.

“Under the Secretary’s directive, illegal aliens up to the age of 30 who meet certain criteria can affirmatively apply for what’s called “deferred action,” which allows them to remain in the country for a period of two years in spite of their unlawful status. The memorandum also allows illegal aliens to simultaneously apply for work authorization, adding an estimated 1.8 million to the workforce at time of record unemployment.

“Congress, which rejected the DREAM Act as recently as December 2010, has stood idly by while the Administration has enacted such policies and systematically dismantled enforcement of U.S. immigration law. Leaders in both the House and the Senate have sat on the sidelines as the president has violated the Constitutional Separation of Powers and taken away their authority to write and regulate immigration laws.

“As President Obama even admitted himself, it is Congress’ job to pass the law and the executive branch’s job to enforce the law. If Congress wants to gain the confidence of voters in this country, they must take immediate action.”

“In light of the big news from over the weekend, FAIR has compiled a preliminary rundown of Vice Presidential Candidate Paul Ryan’s (R-Wis.) immigration record,” said Stein. “The quotes and voting records were pulled from Rep. Ryan’s official House website and FAIR’s voting reports.”

Illegal Immigration

• Amnesty:“…I do not support amnesty for the millions of illegal immigrants already living in the United States. Any reform proposal must require that those who have disregarded the rule of law are not rewarded for their actions.”
• DREAM Act:Voted against the bill during lame duck session in 2010 but website is vague on whether he’d support it as part of a comprehensive amnesty bill: “It would be a serious mistake to pursue piecemeal reforms like the DREAM Act without first putting in place the fundamental components of immigration reform.”
• Employment Verification:Ryan introduced the New Employee Verification Act in 2008. Introduced with Rep. Sam Johnson (R-Tex.), the bill provided for an alternative to the current (and highly effective) E-Verify system.
• Sanctuary Cities:Ryan has supported stripping sanctuary cities of State Criminal Alien Assistance Program (SCAAP) funding.
• State enforcement:The VP candidate supported the 287(g) program to allow local and state law enforcement officials to be trained and authorized to enforce U.S. immigration laws.
• Border Security:Ryan voted for the Secure Fence Act of 2006, which, among other security measures, directs the Department of Homeland Security to build a double layer fence along parts of the U.S.-Mexican border.
• Public benefits:During the health care debate and past expansions of public programs, Ryan has expressed the need to strengthen verification systems to prevent illegal aliens from accessing publicly funded benefits.

Legal Immigration

• Seasonal Guest Workers: As a Representative from a state with a large agriculture industry, it is no surprise that Ryan advocates for an expanded seasonal guest worker program. Ryan supports increasing unskilled, seasonal foreign workers: “Due to a lack of seasonal H-2B visas, some Wisconsin businesses face annual labor shortfalls.”
• Expanding Legal Immigration: In an interview with ABC in April this year, Ryan offered general support of Romney’s immigration platform, particulary dealing with legal immigration. Rep. Ryan is likely to continue to toe the Republican party line – anti-illegal immigration, pro-expansion of legal immigration – during the campaign.
