31 Bodies Discovered In Mass Grave in Veracruz

At least 31 bodies have been discovered in 12 clandestine graves in the municipality of Cosamaloapan, located towards the south of Veracruz. It is reported that all of the bodies show signs of torture and are mutilated.

The information was disclosed on Wednesday, June 18 by the head of the Regional Deputy State Attorney, General Arturo Herrera Cantillo, who said that some of the bodies “had been buried for more than a month”.

The corpses were found on Monday, June 16 during a military patrol in an abandoned ranch called El Diamante, located on the outskirts of the municipalities of Tres Valles and Cosamaloapan, the official added.

Elements of the Mexican Army and Navy are currently guarding the area.

People with missing relatives went to the morgue of the Forensic Medical Service of Cosamaloapan to try to identify the bodies found in the clandestine graves in the municipality of Tres Valles. About 30 people gathered outside the morgue waiting for a response from the authorities, but their assistance was very slow so they abruptly entered a room where they found one of the bodies.

Meanwhile on Wednesday, people with missing relatives or friends approached the authorities to find out if their loved ones are among the victims. As reported by the Veracruz Attorney, “some of the people might be native to this region”.

Authorities have said that the number of the corpses could increase.

Los Zetas, the Gulf Cartel and CJNG operate in Veracruz.
