The massive influx of illegal aliens into the United States through the Rio Grande is another outstanding example of Barack Obama’s failure to lead. To say that illegals pouring over the Southern border has reached crisis proportions is to state the obvious rather late in the game. The problem is one of national security, and the person responsible for doing nothing for far too long occupies the White House. The uptick in violent crime and theft in regions of the United States where illegals are present can be attributed to this President’s refusal to protect the border. An act of terrorism pinned on one who entered the country from the Southern border is a real prospect rightfully feared by border state authorities.

Given the porous nature of the Southern border it does not require too much imagination to contemplate entry of terrorists through that border into the United States. Indeed, every day that passes with the border effectively open for illegal traffic is another in which the temptation to infiltrate the United States through that avenue becomes ever more attractive to terrorists.

The President has an irreducible duty to protect the United States from invasion, whether that is from troops, armed cartels or gangs, or illegal aliens. The threat of harm is real, the danger to the entire country should be apprehended, and every effort should be undertaken to close the border and act against the countries allowing (even condoning) the migration to the United States.

While the border cannot be sealed entirely, the federal government can certainly turn over to the states the opportunity to work with interested parties in each border state to build militias capable of policing the border, arresting illegal entrants, and assisting with their return to the border and release back to their countries of origin. This administration has created an environment of hostility between the federal border patrol and the state police. For example, Sheriff Joe Arpaio and Governor Jan Brewer of Arizona, are treated like pariahs by this Administration when, instead, they should be encouraged to expand their efforts at protecting the security of Arizona from the deluge of illegal immigrants.

At the same time, we must recognize that our nation’s greatness is indeed predicated on maintaining an opportunity society in which those with skills and resources who wish to come to the United States to build their fortunes should be welcome, so long as they have a background free of crime and connections to terrorists. The present system for legal immigration is a disgrace, causing many hard working and able individuals with marketable skills and exceptional talent to be locked out of the country, while illegal aliens enter with ease.
