LOS ANGELES, CA (Catholic Online) – Over 7,000 Cuban refugees are expected to illegally cross the Mexican border into the United States within the next few days.

According to KRGV, the Hidalgo International Bridge continues to buzz with activity as hundreds of Cubans cross the border.

Jose Angel Rodriguez, a cab driver of 40 years, reported increasing numbers of Cubans crossing the entry point.

“They get here every night, in the morning, and at night they get here,” he explained. “They go to Laredo, too.”

Congressman Henry Cuellar’s office reported Cuban refugees coming to Laredo’s Point of Entry daily in increasing numbers from Central America through Mexico to the border.

Several 15-passenger vans with Florida license plates wait down the road from the bridge to transport friends, families and other Cuban refugees further into the United States.

One driver, Giovanni Acosta, admitted, “In Cuba, there’s nothing. There’s no freedom. We came from Cuba because the pressure that we have there.” More here

Well, over 20 years after its last refugee crisis, Miami is about to find out.

Thanks to an unusual agreement among several Central American governments, thousands of Cuban migrants who have been stuck in immigration limbo will now be able to enter the United States on a path to citizenship, and most of them are expected to head to southern Florida.

This impending refugee crisis has been building for months. As Fusion’s Tim Rogers has documented, Cuban migrants aren’t just using rafts anymore. Instead, they’re taking a 5,000-mile land route from South America through Central America to reach the U.S. border in Texas.

But recently, some 8,000 of them have been bottlenecked in Costa Rica by the Nicaraguan government’s refusal to grant them passage. The migrants endured for months with an uncertain future. Then, a few weeks ago, anunexpected announcement came: nearly all the Central American governments agreed to a plan to carry the migrants by plane from Costa Rica to El Salvador—bypassing Nicaragua.
