The Global Corruption Index 2017 report shows that Mexico has fallen by 30 places in the last five years. Mexico is now ranked in 123rd place.

This places Mexico as the worst evaluated country of the Organization for Cooperation and Development (OECD) and of the nations that make up the G20 group.

Transparency International published the latest report and the analysis incorporates data from the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) and the World Justice Project.

Despite the introduction and implementation of the National Anticorruption System, Mexico worsened in this matter, falling 30 places in five years according to the Corruption Perception Index data.

From 2012 to 2017, our country went from 105 to 135. In the first year, the score was 34 points on a scale of 100, and in 2017 it was 29, one point less than what was recorded in 2016.

Transparencia Mexicana said that the 2012 report was made on a list of 176 countries and the 2017 ranking considered 180 countries.

At the regional level and in the 2017 registry, Mexico ranked among the last five places in Latin America – as well as Honduras and Paraguay; only above Guatemala, Nicaragua, Haiti and Venezuela.

The CPI scale measures the level of corruption in different degrees of society and government of 180 countries in the world, on a scale from 0 to 100, where 0 is the most corrupt country and 100 is the best evaluated on the subject .

Transparencia Mexicana attributes to this drop in the CPI to the resistance to install the Anti-Corruption System throughout the country, the absence of an Independent Prosecutor’s Office to conduct the investigations and the lack of firm sanctions for the large corruption cases known to the public .

On the other hand, it recommends the Mexican government promotes the efficient installation of the National Anticorruption System, to incorporate the Financial Intelligence Unit (UIF) and the Tax Administration Service (SAT) in this system to prevent money laundering and diversion to ghost companies.

Likewise, it calls for the creation of a capable, autonomous and independent Public Prosecutor’s Office to ensure that the country’s anti-corruption policy does not depend on politics or private interests, as well as progress towards transparency systems in all public institutions. , including the maximum publicity and open formats regarding financing to political parties and their suppliers.

More Transparency Does Not Mean Less Corruption:

The Corruption Perception Index study coincides with the 2017 Budget Transparency Index, published by the Open Budget Partnership, where Mexico ranked six out of 102 countries.

This shows that transparency, by itself, does not necessarily lead to a reduction in corruption.
