Train Crash 'Miracle Girl' Escapes Leg Amputations After Five Surgeries

The “miracle girl’ who was saved from the wreckage of the July 23 bullet train collision nearly 12 hours after rescue efforts began underwent her fifth surgery on Monday and will likely get to keep her legs.

Two-year-old Xiang Weiyi, nicknamed “Little Yiyi” by the Chinese press, was trapped under a mangled train carriage for 22 hours after two high-speed trains collided near Wenzhou last month. Her parents were killed and she was the last survivor found.

Yiyi’s uncle, Xiang Yuyu, told The Epoch Times that the girl had endured five operations to remove necrotic tissue in her left leg, and that there is hardly any muscle remaining. She developed muscle necrosis after being trapped in a crushed train that plunged from an aqueduct.

Yiyi initially faced the possibility of amputation of her legs, but luckily the hospital ruled that out after the second surgery.

Xiang said that his niece, who remains in an intensive care unit at a Wenzhou hospital, underwent several surgeries because “cutting out all the necrotic tissue in one operation is too much for a little girl to take.” Future surgeries might be needed, he added.

Although Yiyi’s legs have now been saved they might not be able to regain normal function in the future due to nerve damage.

Xiang recently posted an open letter online asking the Ministry of Railways to “save both of Yiyi’s legs.”

“Poor little Yiyi has lost her parents. Please don’t let her lose her freedom [to walk normally],” he wrote.

He describes her disposition has having changed dramatically after the traumatic ordeal and says that she still suffers from constant moods swings.

Ministry of Railways spokesperson Wang Yongping’s claim that Yiyi’s rescue was a “miracle” has drawn strong criticism and condemnation from the media and the general public due to perceived negligence and carelessness in rescue efforts.
