Martha Wainwright — ‘Come Home to Mama’ (V2)

The third studio album from this member of the famous singer-songwriting Wainwright family is an emotional look back over recent life experiences. Wainwright’s mother, the folk legend Kate McGarrigle, passed away in 2010 and it is poignant that the last song she wrote, the beautiful ‘Proserpina’, is given new life by Wainwright and is one of the standouts here. While some of the rockier, angstier songs tend towards the unnerving, its on the slower pieces that her extensive vocal range is at its most moving, enhanced by such subtle touches as the intricate clattering of bells on ‘Leave Behind’ or dreamy tempo changes on ‘Four Black Sheep’.
