It is no surprise that the United States with 167 million Facebook users has the highest number of users of the social media network of any country around the world. It also has the highest percentage of any population in the world that has signed up with the U.S.-based media network. However, when it comes to Facebook’s most active users, they are found elsewhere.

In terms of the number of posts on Facebook, users in Egypt are the world’s busiest, as recently released figures by the Socialbakers show. The social media analytic company monitored the number of posts produced on average in most countries were Facebook is active.

Here are the top five countries with the most active Facebook users.

1. Egypt

In Egypt, Socialbakers counted that users make an average of 380 Facebook posts per month. That’s 12.5 posts per day, or five times more level of activity by American users.

With two-thirds of its 82.5 million population being illiterate, and only one quarter having access to Internet, a total of 11.7 million Egyptians are on Facebook—that is 11 times less than the number of Facebook users in the U.S.

During the uprising in Egypt that led to the ousting of longtime President Hosni Mubarak in January 2011, Facebook played an integral role. Facebook, along with Twitter and other social media sites, were “instrumental in organizing, motivating, and directing these crowds as to where to go and what to do,” the Cairo Review of Global Affairs wrote.

2. Russia

Russian Facebook users are the world’s second most active when it comes to frequency of posting, according to numbers from Socialbakers. On average they make 111 posts to Facebook per month, or 3.6 posts per day.

Russia is one of the few countries where a local social networking service site is dominating the market. VKontakte (“in touch”) offers similar functionality as Facebook and with 140 million users on the Russian-speaking Internet, the company has so far succeeded in maintaining its position.

3. Colombia

In this South American country, more than 80 percent of all web users are on Facebook. They are the world’s third most active on the network with an average of 109 posts per month.

4. Italy

In Italy, Facebook users make on average 107 posts per month. Italy also has the 11th highest number of Facebook users in the world with a total of 22.7 million.

Despite an ever growing number of users in Italy, a two-year study from the University of Milan on under-graduated students came to a surprising conclusion. Most respondents, while being Facebook users, criticized the social media website as being a form of “online exhibitionism.”

5. Brazil

Brazil has the world’s second largest number of Facebook users, who make an average of 103 posts per month.

In South America’s most influential country, Facebook has experienced rapid growth with 15 million new members in the last half a year, becoming the most-visited site in the country, ahead of Google.
