What is Pattern Making?

A pattern can be created by cutting a piece of paper which is shaped as per design and requirement. Once shaped, the papers are traced onto the fabric to cut the piece in an accurate shape. Pattern making can be done at home and is done mainly by more experienced sewers. A common method to make a pattern at home is to copy the same design given on a garment purchased from market. For say, a particular clothing item is used for years, but you want the same design to be used on new cloth as a replacement. The desired pattern can be replicated for the new garment which you will wear. The piece of the old garment can be used onto the new fabric to create a fresh garment.

This style of using old garment design onto the new for replacement or creating multiple same looking garments is commonly used. More experienced sewers use this style to reconstruct a garment. The most common areas are cuff placement and button holes. Other than this, there are computer software programs that contain state-of-the-art designs used by both home and industrial use for pattern making. Computer based designs or computer aided design called in short as CAD software can be purchased and loaded on home computer to get a new design or pattern. Computer software related pattern gives more time and better modified look as required. CAD allows the person to draw, calculate measurements, adjust and do a multiple things for creating a better pattern.

Prior to the development of CAD software, pattern making was done manually since decades through sewing the exclusive garments. The beginning was very challenging where sewing machines were also very expensive, but soon during 1869 in industrialized countries, sewing machines became affordable.
