New Greek political party: “Drachma 5 stars”

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Some Greek seems to have become jealous of Beppe Grillo’s success story and his “5 Star Movement”.  Theodoros Katsanevas, former son-in-law of PASOK founder Andreas Papandreou, revealed the establishment of a new political party: “Drachma 5 Stars”. A party with main aim the return to national currency, the Drachma.

“Drachma, Greek Democratic 5 Star Movement” is the full name of Katsanevas’ party consisting of more than 200 founding members like doctors, economists and others.

The “five stars” symbolize the five targets of the party: get rid of international loan agreements, return to drachma, self-reliant development, national dignity and social justice.

The party aims to raise the issue of a referendum on return to national currency and seeks to cooperate with other political parties in favor of euro exit and return to Drachma.

Theodoros Katsanevas is professor of economics. He was married to the daughter of Andreas Papandreou, Sofia. Katsanevas was founding member of PASOK and was elected several times in the Greek Parliament, continuously from 1989 until 2004.

5 stars irony

Greek internet users ‘welcomed’ the establishment of the new Drachma-party with lot of ironic comments.

“As if the father and the son were not enough, now the son-in-law will save us,” commented somebody with reference to former prime ministers Andreas and George Papandreou.

“Next political party will ask return to mna*”, proposed another user.

“The only 5 stars valid in Greece are those in the form of a mountza**” commented another.

You can read more comments here although in Greek.

PS Odd enough, here in Greece we indeed tend to think of mountza when it comes to five …stars. Just recently. So, in the last three years…

*Mna: ancient Greek silver coin of 100 Drachmas

**Mountza is the most traditional gesture of insult among Greeks which consists of extending all fingers of one or both hands and presenting the palm or palms towards the to-be-insulted person in a forward motion.
