The Malaysia Airlines plane downed over Ukraine is actually the same plane that is “missing” in the South Indian Ocean. First, some background.
It has been widely known for some time that Malaysia Airlines is in financial trouble. These troubles have been going on at least two years. Management came up with a scheme to have one of their planes dissappear, so they could collect insurance on it. The plane was worth 50 million dollars. Here’s how they did it.
At the handover point just south of Vietnam, the pilots turned off the transponder for a bit. At that time a long range business jet rendevouzed with them, and this plane then turned on it’s transponder, and followed the now famous westward course, and then southward to the south Indian Ocean. The crew of this plane had the “Ping” code to fool the satellite system. The actual airliner returned to Kuala Lampur and landed, and the passengers were each paid $25,000 to stay quiet about the whole thing. The long range business jet continued on to the South Indian Ocean, and stopped the pings over what is now the search area, and actually landed in Australia, refueled and went back to Kuala Lampur. It looked like a common charter flight, and arroused no suspicion.
Malaysia Airlines changed the registration markings and did minor cosmetic work so that the plane looked slightly different. They put in a claim for 50 million dollars and then put the plane back in service.
Coincidentally, it was this same plane that was shot down over the Ukraine. It now looks like Malaysia Air will collect ANOTHER 50 million in insurance. The 100 million looks like it will not be enough to keep them afloat anyway, and they will probably go broke quite soon.
