Dallas Ebola: Duncan dead, sheriff forced to enter virus-laden home hospitalized with 'symptoms'
The first US Ebola patient Thomas Duncan is now confirmed dead as his condition worsened over the last few days. There were rumors of emergency and possibly experimental drugs being used for his treatment but it is believed his symptoms were too severe.
Bloomberg “It is with profound sadness and heartfelt disappointment that we must inform you of the death of Thomas Eric Duncan this morning at 7:51 am,” Texas Health Presbyterian Hospital said in a statement today.
Now, reports have been confirmed that a possible second case of the virus may have affected one of the sheriff’s deputies who was forced to enter the apartment to try to get Duncan’s family to comply with quarantine orders. The deputy went to a local clinic after waking up with troubling symptoms. Paramedics transported him to the same hospital which was caring for Duncan.
CBS DFW The patient, Michael Monnig, was transported from a Frisco Care Now facility where he was complaining of “stomach issues,” according to sources. According to CBS 11’s Andrea Lucia, Monnig’s children said he woke up this morning feeling sore and a little nauseated. He went to clinic as a precaution. * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * * First responders transported Monnig from the Care Now located at 301 W. Main Street in Frisco. The clinic reported that he was “exhibiting signs and symptoms of Ebola.”
The Dallas Morning News did note that officials were clarifying the events and many were downplaying the risk saying that this is a case of taking appropriate precaution.
thescoopblog.dallasnews.com Sgt. Chris Dyer, president of Dallas County Sheriff’s Association told our colleagues at KXAS-TV (NBC5) that the deputy is not exhibiting classic symptoms of Ebola such as a a high fever. Rather, he said the deputy didn’t feel well and went to see a doctor.
Last week, after the original diagnosis was confirmed, 5 deputies, county health and CDC officials entered the apartment to try and stabilize the situation. Some at the sheriff’s department have expressed displeasure with the federal agencies they feel should be showing more leadership and utilizing more proper resources to keep everyone safe. The deputy’s son spoke to the media about the troubling experience. Called it 4 days ago.
