The United Nations has lost a doctor to Ebola as the virus continues to spread from West Africa. The death comes as another blow to medical staff fighting the outbreak as the patient is a Sudanese doctor who was infected in Liberia, the country at the center of the outbreak.

AFP

A UN employee infected with the Ebola virus in west Africa has died after arriving in Germany last week for treatment, the hospital said on Tuesday.

“The Ebola patient died during the night in the St Georg Clinic in Leipzig,” it said in a brief statement.

“Despite intensive medical care and the best efforts by medical staff, the 56-year-old UN employee succumbed to the serious infection,” it added.

Local health officials said last week that the patient was a Sudanese doctor who had arrived in Germany from Liberia on Thursday.

The UN revealed that 41 more people are under surveillance as they may have had contact with the deceased team member.

Liberia’s United Nations peacekeeping mission says 41 staff members, including 20 military personnel, are under “close medical observation” after an international member of its medical team contracted Ebola.

The mission said in a statement that the measures were precautionary and that none of the staff members had shown signs of Ebola.

The staffers were identified via contact tracing and will be observed for 21 days, which the World Health Organisation says is the maximum incubation period.

The member of the medical team, whose name and nationality have not been disclosed, was diagnosed Monday and arrived in Germany Thursday for treatment – the third Ebola patient to be flown there.

It is the second case of a UN staffer contracting Ebola in Liberia. The first died on September 26.

The news comes as the World Health Organization notes the total number of cases is likely to pass 9,000 this week, if it has not already done so. Recorded deaths of from the virus topped 4,000.
