Battle for IMO

Russian Federation rised candidate for General Secretary of the International Maritime Organisation (IMO) for the first time in its history. This is the Deputy Director of the Russian Department of policies in the field of maritime and river transport – Vitaly Klyuev. Russia is a Member State of the IMO since its establishment and the reason for rising a candidate is the attempt of some Member States to IMO to make the organization platform for biased discussions. Russian candidate promises that will ensure a balanced decision.

The elections for the General Secretary of IMO will be in June and will start working from the first day of next year.

Besides Russia, also Denmark and Cyprus raised their nominations. Cyprus government offers for the post Andreas Chrysostomou, who currently manages the Department of shipping. Andreas Chrysostomou is known figure in the IMO, as for many years, he was managing the Committee for the Protection of the Marine Environment of the international organization. In support to this application also united the Cyprus maritime transport business. Local marine Chamber believes that Chrysostomou meets all the requirements for appointment to the post. Current director of maritime authorities in Denmark Andreas Nordset also was nominated for the position.

For the second time South Korea will try to nominate its candidate - Lim Kai-tak, who led the port authorities in Pusan. According to this year’s candidate for the general secretary of the IMO from Korea, his country and local ships businesses will receive worldwide recognition for their contribution to the industry if it took office.

The future general secretary of the International Maritime Organization will be selected among the 40 voting in secret ballot. It is possible that the first round of elections to be elected the candidate who gets the most votes. If nobody gather over half the votes cast shall be extended in the next election, while each subsequent drop candidates with the fewest votes. Currently six are experts who want to take up the post of secretary- general this Koji Sekimizu. In addition candidates Russia, Cyprus, Denmark and Korea, their applications are still built Netherlands, Kenya and the Philippines.
