Sherwood, It was never their story….

Between the Moon and “New-York-City”

Research your family history. Your ancestors never intended to let you down. They left clues so you could find yourself.

Etymology of  Sheridan

This is an Anglicized form of the Old Gaelic name O’ Sirideain. The Gaelic prefix “o” indicates “male descendant of”, plus the personal nickname Siridean composed of the element “siride” meaning “elf”, plus the diminutive suffix “an”. In Irish mythology, the elf was usually looked upon as a rather mischievous creature, so we can presume that the first name bearer was a mischief maker. The family originated in County Longford where they held church property. Later they moved to County Cavan – the county in which the name is most prevalent today. The Sheridans distinguished themselves in the field of literature. Richard Brinsley Sheridan (1751 – 1816) was a successful Dublin-born dramatist and author of “The Rivals” and “School Scandal” General Philip Henry Sheridan of Cavan (1831 – 1888) was a Commander in the American Civil War. The birth of Bernard Michael Sheridan, son of Patrick Sheridan and Anna McNerney, on February 18th 1920, was registered at Clonfin in the district of Granard, in the county of Longford. A famine immigrant, William Sheridan (aged 24 yrs.,), departed from Liverpool aboard the “Kalamazoo”, bound for New York on March 24th 1846. The first recorded spelling of the family name is shown to be that of Denis Sheridan, of County Cavan, which was dated 1612, assisted Bedell in translating the Bible into Irish, during the reign of King James 1 of England and V1 of Scotland, 1603 – 1625. Surnames became necessary when governments introduced personal taxation. In England this was known as Poll Tax. Throughout the centuries, surnames in every country have continued to “develop” often leading to astonishing variants of the original spelling.

Yonkers Historical Society

The Yonkers Historical Society maintains the historic Sherwood House (built circa 1740), sponsors a wide variety of special events, advocates for the preservation of historic landmarks and neighborhoods, and fosters a greater appreciation of the city’s heritage through its educational programs. Its library boasts photographs, books, maps, and documents that cover almost every aspect of our community’s history over the last four centuries. The Sherwood House, a tenant farmhouse, is one of the few existing pre-Revolutionary homesteads in New York state; and a well-preserved example of an Anglo-Dutch home. It contains period furnishings and artifacts.

The society offers a library, a quarterly journal (select articles available online), and a collection of early 20th–century postcards of Yonkers (available online). Tours guided by an interpreter in period dress are available at the Sherwood House.

Are Seneca and Iroquois the same?

The Seneca are a group of indigenous Iroquoian-speaking people native to North Americawho historically lived south of Lake Ontario. They were the nation located farthest to the west within the Six Nations or Iroquois League (Haudenosaunee) in New York before the American Revolution.

and from the revisionist historians…

Seneca Village was a small settlement of mostly African American landowners in the borough of Manhattan in New York City, founded in 1825 by free black people – the first such community in the city – although it also came to be inhabited by several other minorities, including Irish and Germanimmigrants, and possibly some Native Americans

The settlement was located on about 5 acres (2.0 ha) approximately bounded by where 82nd and 89th Streets and Seventh and Eighth Avenues would be now, if Central Park had not been built. A stone outcropping near the 85th Street entrance to Central Park is believed to be part of a foundation of the African Methodist Church.

At its peak, the community numbered more than 350 people, and had three churches, two schools, and two cemeteries. It existed until 1857, when it was torn down for the construction of Central Park. (Wikipedia)

History Detectives

Since 1859, millions of people have enjoyed the natural beauty of Central Park. What do you know about the origins of Central Park? Did you know that before the park existed, the land it lies on was home to about 1,600 residents? One neighborhood that once lay within the boundaries of the park was called “Seneca Village” (although residents may not have called it that.)

No photographs of Seneca Village survive, and no personal papers or living descendants of its residents have yet been found. So how do we know anything about it, what do we know, and why should anyone care? An important story about this place emerges from newspaper articles, maps, census data, and other records of the day. Seneca Village deserves our attention as one of the first communities of free, “African-American” property owners and immigrants in pre-Civil War New York.

Description

English: A map of Seneca Village fomerly located in today’s Central Park in Manhattan.

I walked a far amount this weekend… out of town. And all through Central Park I found foundries, caste irons of Campbell.

It is very important for everyone to return to the land your ancestors. Where the soil, rocks and trees all remember you. There you will find your true inherant self.

I walked, took the bus and walked some more. When night fell, I slept along the way…North. All the while following “Central Park Avenue” towards Yonkers Gateway and North Broadway… towards Valhalla. Passing along the way Midland, Melrose, Fort Hill, Underhill Road and Marion.

Pass New Castle (White-Plains, “Home of the State of New York”) and Valhalla and further North you will find the town, Yorktown. A Town with a rich historical heritage beginning with its first indigenous inhabitants marked by Empire manhole covers much like this,

(Note: There are many, areas such as “North Carolina” and “Tennessee” with the same names. All denoting the same family.)
