Islamist gunmen staged multiple attacks on security forces in Egypt’s troubled Sinai Peninsula early on Friday, two days after the army overthrew elected Islamist President Mohamed Morsi, security sources and state television reported. The security sources said a soldier was killed and two were wounded when a police station in Rafah on the border with the Gaza Strip came under rocket fire. The police post is close to the local headquarters of military intelligence.
Earlier, attackers fired rocket-propelled grenades at army checkpoints guarding El-Arish airport, close to the border with the Gaza Strip and Israel, in the latest of a string of security incidents in the lawless region, the sources said. It was not clear whether the attacks were coordinated and in reaction to Morsi’s removal.
Several hours earlier, Eilat, Israel residents reported hearing explosions in the area, sparking fears of a rocket attack, however police had not located any fallen projectiles. Two blasts were heard at around 9:30 p.m. throughout the southern city, according to witnesses, but the red alert rocket warning siren was not triggered nor were there any reports of injuries or damage.
This could also have been in response to the Egyptian deployment of 30 tanks near the border with the Gaza strip. The timing is very interesting and to me says that this could very well be related to the removal of President Morsi from power in Egypt. I follow the war on terror very closely and I have not recorded a signifigant attack in the Sinai for at least a year. So the timing is fascinating. We know that Morsi had supported the Syrian rebels in Syria and we also know that the Syrian rebels are jihadists, like the Sinai peninsula militants. Who by the way go by several names: Jund al-Sharia, Sinai Salafist Front, Magles Shoura al-Mujahddin, Jamaa’at Ansaar Bait Al-Maqdis, Al Salafiya Al Jihadiya Movement and Al-Qaeda in the Sinai Peninsula to name a few. I cant say for sure without looking in detail whether these are all the same groups or different groups.
Given the climate right no in Egypt, if the Muslim Brotherhood decided to fight back, and I do believe they are, they are staging protests very soon I read, then there could be martyrs. (There already have been) It remains to be seen if the international jihadists will rally to the cause but I know Morsi was at least sympathetic to their cause. Its from the Muslim Brotherhood in Egypt where many a well known jihadist have come from. Stay tuned.. -Mort
