Amid rising tensions, Kerry postpones visit to Israel

 

US Secretary of State John Kerry has postponed a visit to Israel reportedly scheduled for this week, saying it would take place “after Thanksgiving,” the State Department confirmed Monday.

Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu told CNN yesterday that Kerry would arrive in Israel on Friday, but the State Department would not confirm the date, announcing on Monday that Kerry “hopes to go in the coming weeks.”

Netanyahu and Kerry traded barbs last week over Israel’s rejection of a possible deal between the P5+1 and Iran. Kerry hinted that the Israeli prime minister was unaware of the details of the deal when criticizing it, while Netanyahu retorted that he is “continuously updated in detail.”

White House denies report Obama team has been negotiating terms with Tehran, didn’t fully coordinate with Israel.

The Geneva negotiations between the so-called P5+1 powers and Iran are a mere “facade,” because the terms of a deal on Iran’s nuclear program have been negotiated in talks between a top adviser to President Barack Obama and a leading Iranian nuclear official that have continued in secret for more than a year, Israeli television reported Sunday.

Despite ostensible full coordination between the US and Israel over strategies for thwarting Iran’s nuclear weapons drive, the administration did not keep Israel fully informed on those talks, Channel 10 news reported, but Jerusalem nonetheless has a pretty clear picture of what has been going on in the secret channel.

White House spokesman Bernadette Meehan was quoted by Haaretz as saying that the report was “absolutely, 100 percent false.”

Palestinian Authority President Mahmoud Abbas appealed to his chief negotiator in peace talks with Israel to retract his resignation, Israel Radio reported Sunday morning.

Saeb Erekat, the veteran diplomat who has served as the PLO’s top representative in negotiations with Israel, announced last week that he was resigning from his position due to the stalemate in the peace process.

The fact that recent negotiations between Iran and the P5+1 world powers have not resulted in the lifting of sanctions only minimally mitigates the danger that these discussions are even taking place. Frequently during the first two years of his presidency, Obama has berated Israel and professed the notion that Israeli settlements were at the root of its problems with the Palestinians. At one point in 2008, he had said that Jerusalem must remain undivided, but he later apologized, saying “undivided” was a poor choice of words.

On May 19, 2011, Obama began what we call a “six-day tap dance” with Netanyahu, when he presented a policy speech in which he asserted, “The borders of Israel and Palestine should be based on the [pre-]1967 lines with mutually agreed swaps.” The next day Netanyahu took his first dance steps during a White House press conference following a private meeting with Obama, spelling out why anything based on the indefensible pre-1967 borders could never be one of the concessions Israel was willing to make for peace.

The dance continued on May 22, when Obama addressed AIPAC’s 2011 Annual Policy Conference, clarifying what he meant by “[pre-]1967 lines with mutually agreed swaps.”
