FBI chief reverts to July view that Clinton should not face criminal charges

Just 48 hours before the US presidential election, FBI Director James Comey dropped a second bombshell on the Clinton email and foundation cases. Nine days after informing Congress that the investigation against the Democratic candidate had been reopened, following the discovery of 650,000 emails on her aide’s laptop, the FBI chief sent another letter Sunday to top Republicans in the House Oversight Committee.

 “Based on our review, we have not changed our conclusions that we expressed in July” – namely that although Clintonas Secretary of State had behaved with “reckless carelessness” over the use of her private email server for confidential official emails, she would not face criminal charges.

That first announcement gave her rival, Republican Donald Trump’s campaign a major boost.
Comey’s second flip-flop Sunday has let the Democratic candidate off the hook just before the finishing line after the cloud that had dogged her campaign. But Comey did not say the investigations of the email or Clinton Foundation cases had been terminated. “Clinton is protected by the rigged system,” Trump said in response.
