Turkish President Tayyip Erdogan vowed this week during his meeting with US President Donald Trump that if Turkish forces are attacked by the Syrian Kurdish YPG militia, Ankara will “implement the rules of engagement without asking anyone”, according to the Turkish media. Erdogan was also quoted as saying his country will not join the US-led coalition’s operation to liberate Raqqa, Islamic State’s capital in Syria, due to the participation of the YPG, which he called a terrorist group. The Trump administration plans to arm the Kurdish militia as part of its war against ISIS.
Meanwhile, the State Department said Wednesday in a statement that “We are communicating our concern to the Turkish government in the strongest possible terms” regarding a clash the previous day between demonstrators and Turkish security guards outside the country’s embassy in Washington. Eleven people were injured.

Our unique angle on these subjects – and strong intelligence dimension – has earned DEBKAfile a global reputation and a steady readership – which skyrockets in times of crisis.
