Around 54 million Iranians were eligible to cast their votes Friday in the first round of elections for a new president. The two leading candidates vying against each other were the incumbent, Hassan Rouhani, 68, a moderate, who is running for a second term, challenged by a cleric, Ebrahim Raisi, 56, who is backed by the clergy and hardline Iranian Revolutionary Guards. A run-off election will be held on May 26 if no candidate wins more than 50 percent of the vote.

Our unique angle on these subjects – and strong intelligence dimension – has earned DEBKAfile a global reputation and a steady readership – which skyrockets in times of crisis.
