Stakes high as Trump arrives in Hamburg for G20 summit

US President Donald Trump arrived Thursday afternoon in the German city of Hamburg where he will attend the G20 summit of the world’s largest economies the following day. The president is expected to face tough negotiations with the other leaders on a wide range of issues such as Brexit,  climate change, global trade, North Korea and the war on terror. He will also meet Russian President Vladimir Putin for the first time since becoming commander-in-chief. With as many as 100,000 protesters expected, about 20,000 police have been deployed across the city. 
Earlier in the day, declaring that the West is confronted by powers that seek to test its will, Trump called on Russia “to cease its destabilizing activities in Ukraine and elsewhere, and its support for hostile regimes including Syria and Iran,” and instead join responsible nations in their fight against common enemies. In a speech to the Polish nation during his visit to Warsaw, Trump said the world “must stand united against these shared enemies to strip them of their territory, and their funding, and their networks, and any form of ideological support that they may have”. He asserted that the defense of the West ultimately depends on its people’s will to prevail, and that the fundamental question of our time is whether the West has the will to survive. American borders “will always be closed to terrorism and extremism of any kind”, he said.
