ENENews

Peter Coyote, Wikipedia: American actor, author, director, screenwriter and narrator of films, theatre, television and audio books. His voice work includes narrating the opening ceremony of the 2002 Winter Olympics and Apple’s iPad campaign. He has also served as on-camera co-host of the 2000 Oscar telecasts [and won an] Emmy for narration in 1992 [...] ["Coyote is most famous for his 50-plus movie roles, including E.T.'s sympathetic scientist" -Source]

Peter Coyote question to nuclear energy advocate Stewart Brand (h/t Gar Smith): What I find disturbing and sort of a little sociopathic about your perspective is the absence of doubt. […] You are willing to risk the entire commons by introducing a biocide that’s fatal to everything with replicating cells. That stays deadly longer than all human history […] the half-life of plutonium is over 100,000 years, and I can only see the reason is to support this culture. So my question to you is, in the light of such risk, which will be enduring forever […] why are you not willing to entertain all the prior precautionary steps […] rather than continuing the model of centralized power, centralized sale, and keeping us consumers, at the risk of the entire biosphere? (audience applause)

Peter Coyote at the Commonwealth Club of California, May 2013: Actor Peter Coyote imagines that the scientists behind the Manhattan Project didn’t anticipate the global disasters of nuclear energy like Fukushima’s radioactive spill.

      ” Plutonium “Named After Devil””

      = Arrogant BS.

      Facts

      “Date of Discovery: 1940
      Discoverer: G.T. Seaborg
Name Origin: After the planet Pluto”

      http://www.chemicalelements.com/elements/pu.html

      • Dustdevil

Seaborg = moron = calling a new element ‘Plutonium’ because he wanted to copy McMillian’s ‘Neptunium’ (element named after new planet) format. – how original

        Pix = DECEIVER!

Pix, why didn’t you actually explain Plutonium, since you know so much? Oh, you didn’t know it? Well, let me help those who you are trying to so-sarcastically ‘reassure’ that Plutonium is safe, and that Peter Coyote is ‘wrong’ about:

        PLUTONIUM ISOTOPES
        ISOTOPE HALF-LIFE (Yrs) PREVALENCE
        238 87.74 y TRACE
        239 2,410,000 y @100%
        240 65,000 y TRACE
        241 14 y TRACE
        242 37,300,000 y TRACE
        244 8,080,000,000 y TRACE

So, in reality, almost all Plutonium found on earth is Plutonium 239, which is used in nuclear warheads, and has a half-life of 2.4-MILLION YEARS?

See, Peter Coyote is an actor, not a scientist, and while his 8-billion year claim is off for the sake of ‘prevalence of isotope’, you are intentionally heckling while KNOWING that the half-life of Plutonium 239 is over 2.4 million years, meaning it would take almost 10-MILLION YEARS to reduce one pound of Plutonium 239 to one ounce!

Who’s the deceiver, Pix? Hey, maybe you can take us through the health effects of inhaling Plutonium dust? You seem to be such an expert about it.

        • Dustdevil

My error, due to not seeing the damn tiny superscripts properly (old age sucks).

Pu239 has a half-life of 24,100 years, which would still require it 100,000 years to decay 1 pound down to 1 ounce.

          PLUTONIUM ISOTOPES
          ISOTOPE HALF-LIFE (Yrs) PREVALENCE
          238 87.74 y TRACE
          239 24,100 y @100%
          240 6500 y TRACE
          241 14 y TRACE
          242 373,000 y TRACE
          244 80,800,000 y TRACE

It also does not mitigate the fact that almost 100-percent of the Plutonium on earth is also Pu239, either, nor does it change the fact that Pu239 is fissionable, or that it is the most-lethal dust of any toxic element known to man.

    • Pix

“the half-life of plutonium is over 100,000 years, ”

      = Moronic understatement.

“Plutonium is the heaviest primordial element by virtue of its most stable isotope, plutonium-244, whose half-life of about 80 million years…”
      http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Plutonium

It really doesn’t take more that a few moments to check facts, but why bother when you can make a complete a$$ of yourself.
