Japan to “Drop Tanks” Full of Fukushima Nuclear Waste Directly into the Ocean

% of readers think this story is Fact. Add your two cents.

Following a major earthquake in March 2011, a 15 meter-high tsunami ravaged the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant. Though the reactors immediately shut down after the quake, the giant wave that hit Fukushima’s shores disabled the emergency generators that power and operate the pumps that cool the reactors.

The insufficient cooling resulted in the nuclear meltdown of the cores of three reactors, causing the worst nuclear disaster since Chernobyl. A nuclear scientist, Neil Hyatt, has told TRT World, an international news platform of the Turkish Radio and Television Corporation broadcasting from Istanbul and London, that the dismantling and complete cleanup could take up to a hundred years.

Six years after the disaster, the three crippled reactors are still leaking water with high levels of radiation into the Pacific Ocean. Though the Pacific Ocean is a vast stretch of water, Fukushima’s radiation is reaching the coast of the United States, Canada, and Mexico, contaminating the fish we eat and the water we swim in.

While these findings were first considered “fake news” and laughed away, researchers can no longer deny that Cesium-134, the so-called fingerprint of Fukushima, has been found in seawater and fish along the Western Coast of the Americas.

In TRT’s daily news show “Insight,” hosted by former Sky News presenter Martin Stanford, the head of international atomic energy agency has called on the world to help with the cleanup of the Fukushima site.

Japan fails to clean up the mess, plotting to discharge nuclear waste into the ocean

Ever since the tsunami put the Fukushima plant out of business, one of the ongoing core tasks has been to cool the reactors and prevent the release of highly contaminated water leaking from the three units. Though it has been six years since the disaster, the cleanup is making slow progress.

Mark Whitby, chairman and design director of the engineering and consultancy firm WME Consultants, explained that today about 400 tons of water go into each reactor to cool it. Part of the highly radioactive water is recycled to re-cool the reactors, and the rest goes into big tanks, which are stacking up at a fast rate. As reported by TRT, Japan is running out of storage space. There are currently about a 1,000 storage tanks holding 920,000 tons of contaminated water.

As if the marine life isn’t struggling enough already by the vast amounts of plastic in the oceans, the Japanese are now talking about dumping these tanks with nuclear wastewater directly into the sea because they cannot keep building and storing these reservoirs, Whitby told TRT.

Also, to this day researchers are uncertain whether the melted cores are still within the containment structures or if they have burrowed through the vessels, contaminating the groundwater that ends up in the Pacific Ocean. Since many robots, sent out to assess the damage, have been destroyed due to the high levels of radiation that melts their electronics, it is tough to get this information.

Recently, however, one camera lasted long enough to show that molten core debris has burned through the bottom of the inner reactor wall. The radioactive debris is now burrowed deep into the foundations of the reactor, causing the highest radiation levels measured around the reactor since the triple core meltdown six years ago. Until these cores can be retrieved, the reactors will keep leaking radioactive material into the groundwater.

According to Japan’s former prime minister, the current Prime Minister Shinzo Abe is lying about the situation being under control. Abe has also been criticized for forcing more than 6,000 people to return to their home in areas that are still highly contaminated zones.

According to the Japanese government, Japan will be safe by 2020. Therefore, it will hold the Olympic baseball and softball in the Fukushima area to show “Japan is cool,” even if their reactors are still posing a serious threat.

Fukushima Has Already Contaminated 1/3 Of The Worlds Oceans

A field study found that two filter cartridges were coated, which showed elements of cesium, a radioactive substance.

The massive expansion of ocean had diluted it substantially so radioactivity remained at low levels but there was still concern over contamination of seafood even at these low levels. The marine monitoring project was therefore, established to ensure that the seafood of the region was safe for consumption and to maintain a comprehensive overview and full facts of the situation, considering its grave implications.

The TC is due to conclude this year. A few results have caused concern. A field study they conducted on 2 July 2014, revealed from two sets of seawater samples, found that two filter cartridges were coated, which showed elements of cesium, a radioactive substance.

Then recently, trace amounts of cesium-134 and cesium-137 turned up in samples collected near Vancouver Island in British Columbia. The samples collected were separate from the monitoring project set up by IAEA but it is thought the only possible source of these radioactive elements is Fukushima, according to the Integrated Fukushima Ocean Radionuclide Monitoring (InFORM) Network. This is the first time that traces of cesium-134 had been detected near North America.

While these are trace amounts, the danger of radioactive material in any amount cannot be underestimated. However, the experts say that these levels detected cannot really harm us, they are still lower than those we could be exposed to from a dental x-ray for instance.

Having said that, every possible exposure, in any small amount, adds up. The problem with nuclear energy and fallout, the radiation and radioactive materials can travel far and wide with the wind and with the sea. Therefore, we should aim on a global level to keep these levels at zero. In any event the continuous monitoring of oceans will need to be conducted, according to Ken Buesseler, a marine chemist at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institute.

What Buesseler says should be taken on board beyond 2015, particularly since the advice from the IAEA is to dump even more contaminated water into the sea. This is apparently more desirable than holding it in tanks. Any discharge will have to be controlled and continuous monitoring would be needed, in particular near the plant to improve data reliability. This is causing concern and not just to state authorities. Consider the fishermen. Every time they catch fish in the ocean, the fish need to be tested for radioactivity.

Before any further dumping is done, the IAEA and Tokyo Electric Power Co., who control the plant, need to consider not only the environmental impact but socio-economic impact as well. Livelihoods could be affected as well as long-term health of the region and global community eventually.

Iodine and brown seaweed extract protects you from radiation

My brother was in a nuclear power sub and got a large dose of radiation . Today his joints are swollen and they say his own immune system is attacking its self . The navy covered it up instead of discharging him with retired pay they continued on as if nothing happened . Well he is now 54 and disabled . But problem is he is fighting to draw disability . Civilian doctors say it was the over dose of radiation that has caused his problems now . But the government has their own kiss ass doctors that are trying to deny any wrong doing . The only thing now is he is allowed to go to get free military treatment for the conditions he has . Had they owned up to the mistake they made and began paying him disability retirement right after the over exposure and before all the problems arose then they would have saved what he may do to them now . But because of time that had elapsed , they are trying to say what he has maybe from something else . They did my dad the same way . I know we need the military men and women but as far as those in charge of the military services , I have no use for them . when my brother signed up they promised to take him to at lease one of the 2 choices that he had picked as want to go there places . 12 years later as he said I have had enough , the commander told him sign up again and this time you might get to see the places you chose . He told them you lied to me for 12 years , thats quit enough , I am not going to trust you again and mess up 4 more years of my life ! I can get a job and go see these places myself . But after starting work in the civilian world , the radiation he was exposed too began to show forth the damage it had done on his body . Now he has moved back in with mom . Then they wonder why no one trust them any more ! My opinion all nuclear power plants need to be done away with . This disaster should serve to show what a stupid idea it is to use nuclear power plants . There are so many other ways to create electricity . But I’m guessing they want the waste from the nuclear power plants so they can make bombs and also pump radioactive into people to help depopulate the planet .
