Troll the NSA

Linus Torvalds, the creator of Linux, recently revealed that NSA tried to corrupt him. They wanted him to build a special NSA back-door into the Linux operating system. Writing to Becky Akers, a reader notes the obvious, “This is more evidence the NSA cares nothing about the regime’s stated enemies or terrorists. All it cares about is spying on common Americans, and it doesn’t care if the Russians, Chinese, Iranians and Israelis do the same.”

Whether John Ashcroft’s “new paradigm” or Barack Obama’s “new normal,” it doesn’t really matter. Because neither is friendly to freedom. In fact the whole massive spying apparatus that presently captures and stores “the content of trillions of telephone conversations, texts and emails, and can access that content at the press of a few computer keys” proves beyond doubt that the U.S. federal government is openly hostile to freedom today.

So how about joining in a little civil disobedience?

In the spirit of civil protest, patriot Jeff Lyon put together a browser add-on that automatically puts red flag keywords (like bomb, Taliban and anthrax) into the web addresses you visit.

Flagger was created in the spirit of civil protest. By flooding the Internet with red flag keywords, we are setting off the U.S. National Security Agency’s alarms and delivering a collectively powerful statement through the individual free-speech messages that each user can send out.

Flagger is not a solution to the problem of unconstitutional government surveillance. We all have a civic duty to engage in the democratic process and attack this problem at its root. But as long as the NSA continues to spy on us, we have a moral obligation to make their jobs as annoying as possible.
