CEI Applauds President Trump for Establishing Presidential Commission to Review Climate Science

Today, President Trump announced he would sign an Executive Order establishing the President’s Commission on Climate Security, directed by world-renowned physicist Dr. William Happer of the National Security Council staff. The Commission will be tasked with reviewing the science underlying the Fourth National Climate Assessment and other official reports on climate change.  

Director of CEI’s Center for Energy and Environment Myron Ebell said:

“We applaud President Trump for his decision to issue an Executive Order establishing a President’s Commission on Climate Security, despite vehement opposition from individuals both inside and outside government with a vested interest in exaggerating climate change risks. CEI looks forward to a comprehensive, high-level review of the science underlying the fourth National Climate Assessment and other official reports on climate change and its impact on our national security.

“The fact is an independent review of such reports is long overdue. The majority of the climate science funded by taxpayers at the federal level has never been the subject of the type of rigorous review proposed here. Scientists and policy experts have long raised concerns about the shortcomings of official climate assessments, but have been either dismissed or ignored by the agencies authoring the reports.

“The climate campaigners are proposing so-called ‘solutions’ to the problem of climate change that could cost tens of trillions of dollars. It would be malpractice to implement such costly and life-altering policies without much more careful examination of the scientific basis for the claim that global warming poses a catastrophic threat.  CEI has confidence that the National Security Council’s climate review, under the direction of world-renowned physicist Dr. William Happer, will conduct a thorough and transparent review of the climate reports, and we look forward to seeing the results of the commission’s work.”
