CEI Praises FDA for Approving Lower Risk Cigarette Alternative

The U.S. Food and Drug Administration today gave the green light to the marketing of new tobacco products manufactured by Philip Morris. The IQOS “Tobacco Heating System” is a cigarette-alternative, “an electronic device that heats tobacco-filled sticks wrapped in paper to generate a nicotine-containing aerosol.” Competitive Enterprise Institute Senior Fellow Michelle Minton praised the FDA for this action and expressed hope that the agency will continue to approve such reduced harm products.

“The Competitive Enterprise Institute applauds the FDA’s approval of this lower-risk product to compete with traditional cigarettes,” said Minton. “We implore the FDA to go further to improve its approval process so that the smokers have continued access to a safe and vibrant market for harm-reducing alternatives to combustible tobacco.”

Minton has been an outspoken critic of the FDA for its anti-vaping policies and rhetoric, because demonizing such products less available or making them less available to adult smokers could deter smoking cessation.
