YAL, Rep. Katrina Smith Demand End to University of Maine System’s COVID-19 Vaccine Mandate

In light of the Maine Community College System announcing an end to its COVID-19 vaccine mandate, Young Americans for Liberty (YAL)—the nation’s most active youth liberty organization—is urging the University of Maine System to follow suit. The UMaine System continues to uphold its vaccine mandate, which YAL argues is a violation of medical freedom and individual privacy.

Since the pandemic began, YAL has fought mask and vaccine mandates at dozens of colleges and universities around the country, while the organization’s Hazlitt Coalition—the growing network of more than 320 pro-liberty legislators from over 40 states—has filed 25 bills defending American citizens’ rights against COVID-related infringements. Maine is now a top priority for YAL and Hazlitt members like State Representative Katrina Smith (R-District 62).

Below is a statement from Rep. Smith:

“Over the last year and a half, Maine students have had their educational options limited by an authoritarian vaccine mandate that never should have been implemented in the first place. It is past time for all Maine educational institutions to reverse course and lift any COVID-19 vaccine mandates, following the lead of the Maine Community College System.”

JP Kirby, YAL’s Director of Student Rights, echoed that sentiment:

“Liberty in Maine is picking up momentum. Our YAL activists on campus in Maine have relentlessly pushed back against tyranny on their campuses when it comes to free speech and self-defense, and they are now mobilizing to reclaim the bodily autonomy that has been taken from them since 2020. Representatives like Katrina Smith and Laurel Libby are stepping up for student rights, and our students will be there to bring the heat of the grassroots in support.”
