YAL Supports Bills Nationwide to Defend Teacher Carry

As a staunch defender of the Second Amendment, Young Americans for Liberty (YAL)—the nation’s most active youth liberty organization—is supporting four bills nationwide that would advance Teacher Carry. Members of YAL’s Hazlitt Coalition—the growing network of more than 320 pro-liberty lawmakers in over 40 states—have sponsored legislation in Minnesota, Mississippi, Missouri, and West Virginia, and all four bills are expected to gain momentum in the coming weeks.

The pieces of legislation are listed here, based on current status:

• Mississippi: Sen. Melanie Sojourner’s SB 2079 (passed State Senate)
  • Allows trained school employees to carry concealed firearms for the protection of students, employees, and others
• West Virginia: Del. Charles Horst’s HB 2549 (passed House of Delegates committee)
  • Authorizes teachers in elementary or secondary schools to carry concealed firearms and become school protection officers
• Minnesota: Sen. Nathan Wesenberg’s SF 90 (pending hearing)
  • Enables permitted and trained school staff to carry firearms
• Missouri: Rep. Nick Schroer’s SB 399 (pending hearing)
  • Empowers school districts to designate volunteers as school protection officers

“What does our society use to protect our politicians and our banks? Guns. Yet, what do we use to protect our precious children? Anti-gun signs. These signs are completely useless for protecting kids from deranged people with evil intentions. In fact, the prohibition of guns at schools is a key part why these wicked people target them. Teacher Carry would help teachers defend themselves and their students, and it serves as a powerful deterrent that would make people with violent intentions think twice before targeting schools. America’s kids deserve the same protections as our politicians and banks.”
