Timing of Joe Donnelly’s Support for Tax Cuts Suspicious

Indianapolis (July 24, 2012) – State Treasurer and U.S. Senate Candidate Richard Mourdock reiterated his long-held position against President Obama and Washington Democrats’ plan to raise taxes on small businesses. In a press release today, Congressman Joe Donnelly agreed with Treasurer Mourdock.   
 
“For months, Congressman Joe Donnelly was silent about the pending Obama-Pelosi-Reid tax increase. Today, Congress Donnelly suddenly opposes the increase,” stated Treasurer Mourdock. “Sorry Congressman Donnelly, no one is buying your ‘Joe come lately’ routine!”

True to his, “for it-against it” pattern, Congressman Joe Donnelly has been all over the map when it comes to supporting tax cut extensions.      

• In 2006, Donnelly Said He Favored Making Permanent All The Tax Cuts Except Those For The Top 1%, Which Could Also Be Made Permanent As Long As The Budget Is Balanced. Donnelly: “I support making all the tax cuts permanent immediately, except for the top 1 percent of wage earners. For the top 1 percent, I support those tax cuts as well, as long as the budget is balanced. • Donnelly Said The Cuts For The Top Income Earners Should Be Revisited When The Economy Recovers. • Donnelly: “[I] Support Extending All Of The Bush Tax Cuts.” “Donnelly said Friday the last thing working families and small businesses needs at this time is a tax increase. ‘That’s why I voted for the largest middle-class tax cut in history, providing tax relief to 95 percent of working families, and that’s why I support extending all of the Bush tax cuts,’ he said.” (Ken de la Bastide, “Tax Reform On The Table,” Kokomo Tribune, 10/30/10)

“Now, I challenge Congressman Donnelly to join me in calling on Senate Democrats and Obama to make these cuts permanent,” stated Treasurer Mourdock. “I call upon Congressman Donnelly to take a pledge to stay in Washington, DC, during the August recess to address both this dire issue and the pending automatic $600 billion cuts to defense scheduled to take place in January as well.”
