(N.Morgan) There’s been a ton of negative propaganda in regards to the harmful effects of marijuana. A recent report released states there have been NO overdoses due to marijuana use for 2014 or 2015. Many people try to argue that marijuana is a “gateway” drug, which I’ve always found interesting, since most teens first experiment with cigarettes and alcohol. No one ever discusses that part of this issue. Can marijuana impair driving? Yes, however, just as with alcohol, this too can be monitored and regulated.

Here’s How Many People Overdosed on Marijuana Last Year

Marijuana has been used for thousands of years by many different cultures for medical relief, as we are seeing today, many people are turning back to marijuana to treat all sorts of ailments, from Cancer to PTSD. Another argument is that you can’t get the healing properties without the psychotropic effects, such as getting high, which is also false.

CBD is one of over 60 compounds found in cannabis that belong to a class of molecules called cannabinoids. Of these compounds, CBD and THC are usually present in the highest concentrations, and are therefore the most recognized and studied.

CBD and THC levels tend to vary among different plants. Marijuana grown for recreational purposes often contains more THC than CBD.

However, by using selective breeding techniques, cannabis breeders have managed to create varieties with high levels of CBD and next to zero levels of THC. These strains are rare but have become more popular in recent years.

When one brings up the statistics of alcohol abuse and the fatalities involved with its consumption, people get defensive and say, well, it’s legal. Yes, alcohol is legal, and easily accessible in our society. It’s seen as a good time and something we can drink daily to relax after work. This year, the substance has aided in killing Americans at a rate that hasn’t been seen in roughly 35 years according to the Washington Post.

Reports state that more than 30,700 Americans died from alcohol-induced causes in 2015. This number does not include those who died as a result of alcohol related deaths like drunk driving or other accidents. If it did, the number would be close to 100,000.

According to a 2006 report in American Scientist, “alcohol is more lethal than many other commonly abused substances.” The report goes on to also mention:

Drinking a mere 10 times the normal amount of alcohol within 5 or 10 minutes can prove fatal, whereas smoking or eating marijuana might require something like 1,000 times the usual dose to cause death.

But it may not be fair to say that marijuana doesn’t have downsides because clearly it does. It’s speculated that it can cause brain developmental challenges in people under the age of 25 who smoke regularly, as it affects grey matter and it can of course also lead to drugged driving which can also be dangerous. But are the dangers as bad as alcohol? And can we truly compare therapeutic values? What about when we look at pharmaceuticals?

Here are 2 graphs presented by the National Institute on Drug Abuse:

Reviewing the reported cases in the US, we see that prescription drugs prescribed by a doctor, as well as pain reliever addictions, have led to a combined 42,000 or so deaths in 2014. This is even more than alcohol! Strictly from a statistics point of view, prescription drugs, while having value in other areas, come with a great number of downsides and also happen to be the biggest business. Is there a conflict of interest in handing out these drugs when the ability to make money is attached?

Do more drugs than are needed enter our society? The obvious answer is yes, when you look at how often drugs are not only wrongly prescribed, but are also the first option to fix something fickle before we even look at the potential behind lifestyle changes.

Public Demand

Although the public in North America in general seems to be pushing for the legalization of marijuana, it is still opposed heavily. Some groups include the pharmaceutical lobby, who would lose big in profits, as well as police unions who would lose federal budget for the war on drugs. You can begin to see our society runs less on common sense and more on political and monetary rigidity with groups all working against each other in their own interest.

But to be honest, legalization is a whole other topic, because I believe it is not quite as good as people hype it up to be.

Some challenges that would come in include who controls marijuana growth, the quality of what is made available, and the manipulation of that product.

Interestingly enough, among all 2016 presidential contenders, Democratic hopeful Sen. Bernie Sanders (I-Vt.) is the only one who outright supports the legalization of marijuana. As of now the substance is classified as a Schedule 1 drug, up there with heroin and LSD. (which is a whole other topic of discussion)

In closing, shouldn’t it be up to the consumers whether or not marijuana is legal? Shouldn’t marijuana be an option for the those are ill and tired of the mainstream medicines that have been proven to cause addiction and death and typically leave the patients with more unpleasant symptoms than the disease they are fighting?

I have no problem with legalized marijuana for adults, as it is far less ‘immediately deadly’ than tobacco or alcohol (although, anyone who thinks it isn’t deadly at all sounds like a big tobacco PR firm trying to convince you that it’s good for your lungs).

Just like all the gun fear-porn out there right now, it’s not the guns, it’s the people that are the problem. Same with marijuana. It’s not the weed, it’s the fools that can’t stop, that can’t go to work, that think they have to steal to buy some, that’s the problem.

Ask yourself ‘why legalize marijuana now, after all these decades of it being illegal’, and you find that the only ‘higher level tactical reason’ is that TPTB knows what it does to society (increased theft, reduced labor, reduced attention span, etc.) and decided that it was just another facet in their ‘thousand points of light’ (the real meaning behind G HW Bush’s saying) to utterly destroy America.

No, marijuana is not deadly like alcohol, but impaired driving is impaired driving; and a young healthy workforce that won’t work isn’t a workforce. There’s less parentage, less morals, and less general society controls than 50-years ago. Add in a mind-altering drug to irresponsible adults, and you have just another governor removed from the machine-of-society, and another chaos-force to destroy us.

Marijuana deadly? Not so much, but then again, as any combat troop will tell you, if you kill someone in combat, they aren’t a problem any more. The greatest damage you can do to the enemy is wound, disable his troops so that it takes 2, 3 or more support troops to take care of him. It burdens him, it slows him down, it drains his finances to afford such a large support infrastructure. In the end, you win due to his attrition of manpower and money.

Marijuana is just another bullet hole in a knee cap of America. No, not fatal, but not beneficial to stopping TPTB, either.

The only two sides of this discussion are emotional extremes, in which all drugs are good, in every quantity, or the opposite.

Objectively speaking, different varieties do have different side effects, and set people off, with respective temperaments.

If you are reckless, or do have a death with, etc, I am not morally obliged to educate, feed, go to war with you, or defend your growers. Your problem is not my problem or society’s problem.

Non-controversial items, abused by addictive personalities —
      red, ‘Squirt” soda
      natural, black licorice

Past contraband, which resulted in melodramatic raids –
      tea
      molasses
      common kitchen seasonings
      alcohol
      tobacco

The last two are still effectively illegal, unless the duties have been paid.

You stated that; “It’s speculated that it can cause brain developmental challenges in people under the age of 25 who smoke regularly”

The truth is that general assumption has never been satisfactorily proven with good science. All referenced tests have been conducted within the pharmaceutical industry who has a profit driven interest in the outcome of the findings. In Medscape which is a peer review magazine used in med-school it isn’t difficult to grasp that those submitting articles against the medical properties of marijuana are almost exclusively affiliated with the pharmaceutical manufactures or they stand to somehow personally benefit by this mindset. The medical industrial complex is scared to death the truth will come out! If not why all the deceit?

One example that sort of counters the industries misinformation would be my cousin Brian, a renowned nuclear physicist. He smoked marijuana throughout the day, seven days a week, three hundred sixty-five days a year ever since his freshman year in college to ease his back pain. Obviously his intelligence never became an issue. Marijuana’s supposed dangers like the gateway propaganda serve as the boogieman that safeguards the pharmaceutical industry’s interests.

“Reviewing the reported cases in the US, we see that prescription drugs prescribed by a doctor, as well as pain reliever addictions, have led to a combined 42,000 or so deaths in 2014.”

The above is CDC misinformation that was contrived to help the medical industry justify denying legitimate chronic pain sufferers expensive relief. Chronic pain has reached epidemic levels and due to the increased demand and depleted supply the expense has increase dramatically over the past several years. The American Medical Association acknowledges that chronic pain patients are 3 time less likely to abuse their prescription when compared to the public at large, yet the restrictive obligations and blame has been unfairly placed on them.

“In closing, shouldn’t it be up to the consumers whether or not marijuana is legal? Shouldn’t marijuana be an option for the those are ill and tired of the mainstream medicines that have been proven to cause addiction and death and typically leave the patients with more unpleasant symptoms than the disease they are fighting?”

The answer is yes, so long as it has been voted legal by state authority.

      Peace

” pollution and second had smoke

Go and ban all the cars/busses/trucks on the roads and stop talking like a parrot for the BBC

alcohol does more harm but maybe to you the fumes from it will kill you if the BBC tells you to say so.

Yes “Marijuana is a gateway drug” for people that are incline to self medicate but 99% of people are quite safe to smoke now and then and the risk is worth the rewards, i was born free, life comes with risks so stop talking like the nanny state that will get you nuked by Russia if they carry on and your so concerned about early deaths and elf ‘n safty isues.

“demonic infestation whether you believe me not” not quite the way i would word it but the visitors leave after you sober up but i guess you would like to ban horror movies too just to keep us all safe right.

Martus maybe you should have a small one, blast away some music so at least you know what you are talking about because too me you sound a bit stuck up and the education will do you some good but stick to the stuff that looks like it came from a plant and not resin or oil.

        >>>>> WARNING <<<<<<

Pusher selling resin do mix it with something else that can get you hooked in under a week and almost
put me off for life when a freind got £50 worth and this is one reason why it should be made legal to stop it being mixed with other crap.

People believe what they want to believe and always look for as much evidence as possible to support their viewpoint on things, such as the case here. Unfortunately, we’re in a culture that has been so dumbed and uneducated people don’t understand the pyschological effects of pot and other drugs anymore. Marijuana is not harmless, most people I know have used until they had a tramatic experience, and quit. I know a lot of guys who’ve used it, “claiming” that it mellows them out…yet, they still have the worst tempers I’ve ever known, the marijuana just disassociates them from their real feelings and emotions, they don’t seem to understand the difference. This is a drug that disempowers people from taking responsibility for their own experience, along with a lot other drug.
I’ve tried it myself and can’t believe that so many people want it in their lives, its distructive, and should never have been imposed on our society in the first place. Almost all drugs in our culture are doing way more harm than good. Sorry, but I can’t agree with your position on this.

    • sed

I don’t “legalizing” as a solution to anything, however, I do see DECRIMINALIZING as a proper way to leave me the fuk alone so I may live my sovereign life as I see fit. Its none of your business what I do if it causes no harm or loss to another. But as bad luck would have it that is not profitable and exploitation of people is far more difficult.

we TRIED. Took 2 whole bags and cooked it in a cake then ate the WHOLE cake, then proceded to have phat delerium and have never done it again. NO lsd trip compares to total utter od on weed, if you eat a tennis ball size ball of hash it would be about the same effect, good grief. we still speak of “that cake” o mother glory, but we dint die, but we thought we did,

Although overdose death rates are on the increase for several types of drugs, overdose deaths from marijuana remained exactly the same as for the year before. ZERO – yes zero. In 2015, not one single person died from smoking or ingesting marijuana, and no one ever has. This is anti-marijuana propaganda, the fact remains that the recreational use of cannabis is essentially harmless – not to mention its medicinal value, which has been thoroughly proven in dozens of studies.
