4 Reasons Your Customers Don’t Want Artificial Ingredients

When it comes to making decisions about prepared food products, consumers are savvier than ever thanks to the wide variety of information about nutrition and diet now available on the internet. This has led to some misconceptions, of course, but the vast majority of information out there is good enough to significantly alter decisions consumers make about which products they want to take home with them. They have necessarily become a lot more picky about what ingredients they will allow in their foods, and below are some reasons why.

  • They care about their health. Consumers are wary about putting chemicals into their bodies that aren’t perceived as found in nature, because of the potential consequences that those compounds can have with body chemistry. Even if the ingredient is approved by the FDA and its international equivalents, consumers know that doesn’t mean it’s necessarily “safe” for human consumption long term – a lot of the current research is unable to effectively isolate the effects of particular compounds over multiple decades (and such monumental studies are not regularly funded). Therefore, your savvier customers will avoid having to worry and cut such ingredients out of their diets entirely – which might be the smart decision, in the long run. 
     

  • They care about the environment. It’s no secret that chemical manufacturing can be a dirty business – even the most careful and environmentally responsible companies have a negative ecological footprint. That is, unfortunately, the unavoidable consequence of industry. But lessening the distance from raw material to final product by incorporating the latest ingredients on the market can significantly decrease the negative environmental effects of your product, since much of that is in the processing.
     
  • They want to know where their food comes from. Similar to the above two points, regardless of where a chemical is sourced or how “low impact” its processing might be, consumers just feel better being able to identify how a product has reached the manufacturing process, both in terms of being able to trace its geographical routes and in terms of understanding what its first form “was” before it was broken down into manufacturing ingredients.
